How shaken up could our staring XI be by the time of the world cup?

Jozy did some ok things yesterday, but clearly isn't in good form. He essentially had a handful of nice lay-off passes and holding play. Otherwise invisible.

I thought Dempsey looked bad. And he's a guy that generally can look like crap for 60 minutes and then put in a goal and make you kinda forget that he looked like crap.

Aaron looked a whole lot more threatening to me. Could he excel in that underneath role with his pace and ability to get off a shot? Runs from a bit deeper with Altidore laying it off to him? Can you see Aaron replacing Dempsey in the starting XI behind Altidore?

I'd love a guy with more pace, etc. Could also be Donovan behind Altidore allowing some of our other wing guys in? Jurgen is clearly experimenting with some guys on the wing.

It just seems to me that while we're building some good depth and some options in formation and attack roles, we're also seeing extremely poor form from some guys that were pretty much guaranteed starters. That leaves plenty of questions as we enter the home stretch. Its a good thing to build that depth, but the form of the starters has got to concern you. We clearly need Altidore and Dempsey at their best.

I don't think we have another guy that can do what Altidore does - so he probably is still the starter. I can definitely see Deuce on the bench though unless he really picks up.

One final thought - do you expect some line-up changes between the Portugal game in the heat and short turnaround to the Germany game? I certainly do. That Portugal game will be a killer and I am willing to bet on at least 1 late (last 10 minutes) goal if not 2.

I think the heat factor is overated. The game kicks off at 6:30 local time - it'll be muggy, but it won't be awful. I imagine it will impact Portugal more than us. We have three days to recover before Germany, so most could go again.

Well he did what we asked of him - hold up play. The midfield just wasn't there for support and their supply to him resembled what it was a few years ago

And has for quite some time now (club included)

This is the biggest question in my mind when it comes to this team. I dont think we see it happen though

Donovan has to be the LM right now

We don't.

Oh and I'm pretty confident that 75% of this board could makes run past Castillo and muscle his arse off the ball with ease. God he is dreadful and that's being nice

I just don't understand how he keeps getting called in. Let alone the fact that he sucks, doesn't he play in the Mexican league? I thought we were only calling in Euro based players. I'm guessing Lihaj wasn't even considered.

I assume Fabian Johnson has been struck by a meteor in this scenario?

Aron said that's his natural position. He only plays the #9 because Alkmaar need him there, but with his skill set I think he's really more fit for playing in the hole. He has great position sense. If you look at his goals with Alkmaar you'll see that a lot of them are just him being in the right place at the right time to direct a cross/pass towards the goal mouth.

Ha. No. I am hoping he is our LB over DMB

Plus he appears to have the skill and athleticism to take defenders on with the ball at this feet. We dont have many that can

This has been my thinking as well. He doesn't look like the typical lone striker to me.

If we went after a purely pressing and counter-attacking strategy, I think he could work there as his pace and positioning could do well.

But he's not a hold-up guy. Nor does he excel in the air.

If Deuce doesn't start, does he lose the armband?

This is a rhetorical question, right?

He is too morose to be a good leader.

I have a very bad feeling about this WC. The timing is just not working out.

If we start DMB at LB and leave Bedoya or Donovan on the bench then I will be pissed.

We have to start out best XI and if Beasley is considered one of those then were screwed.

Technically, yes, he couldn't wear the armband. I guess I should have said captaincy. Because there are times when the "captain" isn't playing (thus no arm band) but is still considered the captain.

I'm not the most tactic savvy fan, but this just seems to make sense.

Howard
Cameron/Evans Gonzo Besler Johnson
Bradley Jones/Cameron
Zusi Demp/Bacon Cakes
Altidore

Dempsey
LD/Bacon/Zusi
JJ/MB
FJ/Besler/Gonzo/Cameron

The above is the best lineup based on who is performing and who JK will insist on starting, IMO. Clint at this point in his career should be poaching in the final third, ala Berbatov, rather than being asked to help win the possession battle in the middle of the pitch.

You folks are high as balls if you don't think Fabian Johnson starts at LM in our first game.

High.

I don't argue that it seems likely right now, Sheep. But as preparations come to an end and the back line still looks like a trainwreck, JK could change his mind. Right now defensively, US looks like it will lose all three group matches.
