Hypothetical: Yahoo let's you know you have the only perfect bracket in the country headed into Final 4 weekend. On Saturday, both of your teams win and you are still perfect and are now one game away from winning a billion dollars. It's around 11pm Saturday evening and the title game is Monday night. What the hell do you do?

Me: I would need to figure out a way to get my hands on about $200 million (depending on the spread), fly to Vegas, and put it on the money line of the opposite team in my billion dollar bracket. Time is of the essence here, so I would begin lining this all up on Monday or so before my teams eventually win on Saturday.

I guess the major question is how do you get this money.. Would you be able to get it from a bank? Someone in Vegas? Mark Cuban or some other billionaire? How do you get in contact with them in 5 days? What is their cut?

Or would you do something different? What say you?

ETA: Or what if you could sell the rights to the bracket before any Final 4 games are played? What would be your price?

I imagine whomever loans you the money is going to require a majority of the winnings in exchange. Something to think about.

I wouldn't care, just 1 million would appreciably change my life, so I wouldn't be bothered too much.

I'd obviously hedge as much as I possibly could. You'd be really stupid not to try to borrow as much as a bank or whoever would give you. Say it's $1 million you get from the bank, you bet it on the other team, and your original teams wins, whoppedydoo now you only net $999,000,000.

Plus you'd have to consider that you'd be in the news. You'd probably be able to reach out to guys like Cuban.

You'd be giving some company a hell of a deal. You are basically saying that you think the chance of the team you picked winning is 5%. The more heavily favored the team you picked, the higher you could sell the rights.

This is a good idea, IF you can get a buyer and a lawyer to draft a contract in 1 day. And IF the original rules don't disallow something like that. I'm sure there's a lengthy terms and conditions attached to the bracket entry.

There would be no way to fully hedge your bet but you could try.

Don't get me wrong, the math and logic are correct in your statement.

But hypothetically, if $50million was the largest offer I received, i would sell my rights in a heartbeat, regardless of how much the team I picked was favored by.

Not mathematically speaking, but an automatic $50mil is worth more to me than a 50%(or whatever it may be) chance at $1billion.

I agree. Whether or not it's the best mathematical deal, I'd still go for 100% chance of life-changing money. Will someone else make a great deal off of me? Probably, but I don't care.

I think the better question would be:

What would be the least amount of money you would sell the rights to your bracket for?

I'd probably take out a loan and fly to Vegas ahead of the Final 4 and hedge the other losing scenarios as well.

LOL at people saying they would let it ride, even if there is a very "lucky" team that made it to the final and the spread is SOMEHOW double digit I will guarantee myself some money.

Heck even if the highest offer I can get is like 10 Million I will NOT let it ride

Mathematically (if the game is close to 50/50, even teams) yes you should take 500 million or more or let it ride, but that only makes sense if you will have MULTIPLE opportunities like that in the future knowing it will even out. Here you hedge NO question.

That's why when you're betting parlays all the time it's wise never to hedge but if it's a future bet you always hedge.

I don't think it pays out at a billion dollars anyway. I think they said the lump sum is around 600 or so million and then there are taxes and all to take account of. If you hedge with 500 million, you might end up like 100 million in debt. There isn't a casino or bookie in the world taking more than 5 or 6 million dollars on a bet though. Not from some guy off the street..
