Just bought a class c. Looking for campgrounds within a 3 hr drive from New Orleans. We decided to get a camper and stop staying in hotels during weekend trips and vacations after having a really great experience at a Jellystone Campground (rented an on-site 5th wheel) in Tennessee this past summer. The unit if fully self-contained, so a full service campground is not a necessity.

My initial list of "maybe's" include:
Tchefuncte Family Campground
Land of Pines
Flint Creek in Wiggins, MS
Bogue Chitto Water Park outside McComb (have rented cabin here several times)
Rocky Springs Campground on the Natchez Trace
Tickfaw SP
Fairview-Riverside SP

I'd appreciate any information you can pass my way.

Thanks

It's > 3 hrs, but Wind Creek state park in Alabama is awesome. It's large, and there will be a ton of kids for yours to play with.

Bogue chitto state park

Only a couple years old
Not much in the area though if you're looking for things outside of the park

Chicot State Park just north of Ville Platte is awesome.. Has a lake, bayou and hills.

Right in the middle of cajun country too, super friendly locals and awesome meats/food to be had..

Sorry, I should have said I'd like to stay away from a campsite that is known for lots of old people that live that lifestyle and all know each other. I'd like suggestions on campgrounds that are known for having kid-centered activities, playgrounds, pool/water activities, etc.

Thanks. This will definitely be in play on extended weekends.

Watch out for the "Free Candy" vans. There's some sketchy folk the few times I've even ventured into a campground (some places were named above^). I've never stayed at one and probably won't. I would not be comfortable letting any youngin's of mine go unsupervised, and that's a bunch of what camping is about, teaching them self-reliance and independence. Fishing and hunting are more easy to regulate who you chose to be around.

Touche'. However, you also raise a good point. I would rather stay away from campgrounds where alcohol is prohibited.

Definitely in the discussion. Are getting reservations difficult? How long in advance do you have need to make them to be sure of getting a spot?

Also, we'll drive a little longer into Alabama and the Florida panhandle for the quality of the scenery.

Clear Springs, Homochitto Forest. Playground/ swimming, many miles of hiking/biking trails, both primitive and hookup sites. Be careful walking the trails after mississippi turkey season starts (March 15th). Public hunting brings out the worst kind of hunter.

I stumbled upon this place while returning from a weekend in Natchez. I like the swimming area, but I'm kinda skittish because the water is the ideal environment for the amoeba that eats your brain.
