I would need to watch both of them again to make a decision. It's been 20 years since I've seen either one.

Watching platoon now. Always liked the realization of the scenes.

The first 10 minutes of Full Metal Jacket are nearly the best of all cinema.

They're different experiences, but I understand the question.

I like Full Metal Jacket better - better characters overall, although Platoon is fun just to see a bunch of kids before they were stars (Depp, Whitaker, Kevin Dillon, McGinley)- heck even Berenger was mid-30s and Dafoe was 30 when they shot it.

Both were pretty trippy.

Platoon was the better "Vietnam" movie but the Parris Island scenes in Full Metal were better than anything in Platoon.

Platoon didn't have Animal Mother or 8-ball either.

Goes without saying - how Lee Ermey didn't win the Academy Award - frick - he wasn't even nominated (I think he was only nominated for a Golden Globe) - that is probably the second most dominant performance in a military film, next to George C. Scott's title role in Patton - maybe Gregory Peck in Twelve O'Clock High is in that league, too.

FMJ for me.

And this is where I say again that the second half of FMJ is fricking great, and gets unjustifiably shite on all the time for no reason. Sure, the boot camp half is awesome, but the Vietnam half is amazing as well, just in a different way. Animal Mother alone makes it worth it, but the whole sniper scene, "whatta we get for ten dollars?," Mickey Mouse song, etc. It's a great movie start to finish. No doubt.

The boot camp part of FMJ is great, but Platoon is a better overall movie.

"Hell, I like you. You can come over and frick my sister!"

The first half of FMJ was pure greatness, but the second half was just very hit and miss, with a whole lot of miss. The best parts of it were the Colonel's interrogation of Joker's "dichotomy of man" bullshite and the hookers on the street corner. I was also a little touched by Cowboy's "I can hack it" protestations.

Platoon for me. At least you felt like you were watching scenes from a war that did take place in a damn jungle. And it was a better story with better characters.

Platoon all day long for me though I love FMJ as well.

My dad was in Vietnam in '67 into '68 and he has told me numerous times over the years that Platoon was easily the most realistic depiction of what it was like over there amongst the movies that have portrayed Vietnam.

FMJ had a much more inventive and interesting style imo. It did try to convey some lessons about the brutality of war and what it does to people, but it did it in an exaggerated and theatrical manner. I think that Platoon was far more grounded and conventional in its approach. Maybe it tried to give more of a true to reality depiction. I think that both are pretty great, but I just love how Kubrick can put together a movie. I think that he was a master at creating a whole movie experience.

Both were very good. I prefer FMJ slightly. The one turn off about both movies however was the way that almost all the American marines in both movies were characterized as heartless sadistic bastards. I don't doubt there were isolated cases where soldiers were that over the top but the hyperbole was a bit much. The script seemed to try to justify the awful way Vietnam vets were treated when they returned home.

I think it characterized them as brainwashed killers and cannon fodder.

Would go FMJ on R. Lee alone, really anyway. Good matchup.

My godfather, who also served, got all freaked out after watching Platoon. My dad had to go to his house and stay overnight. It screwed him up for a couple days.
