sports radio here is saying Austin, the biggest city in the country without a major sports franchise, is seriously looking into stadium options and that the league has reciprocated the interest.

Assuming they can get the funding for a first class stadium and have a place to put it inside the city and not cedar park or round rock, I think Austin is a much better fit for an MLS team than San Antonio. There is no reason at all for Austin not to have a major pro team.

I gotta be honest, this would be a Tampa Bay Rays style disaster. Having lived there, I would have zero faith in the people of Austin supporting a MLS team.
San Antonio makes sense because they'll latch on to just about anything if the city name is attached to it.
Just my opinion.

I don't agree with that at all. Just for the fact that Austin is a major hipster capital i guarantee you'd draw respectable numbers.
The Rays don't draw because of the location of the stadium. That's why i said it needs to be in Austin proper, close to the river. Put it in Round Rock or Cedar Park and yeah it would fail.

That's true I guess. Portland and Seattle are doing pretty well as cities who have large hipster populations.
I still don't know though. I just think San Antonio is one of those cities who would thrive with a MLS team. That's an extremely loyal fan base.
But yeah, if Austin did get a team, they would absolutely have to situate the stadium within the city. That Cedar Park or Round Rock bullshite would be a massive failure.

I think it could be successful enough. Like a poor ex UT art school grad student version of the timbers kind of support.

It would actually probably be the self-same hipsters as Portland draws since Austin is the bottom point of the hipster exchange triangle with Portland and Williamsburg.

Hipster nation.
I think Austin would do well with a MLS club.
They just need a stadium plan and good ownership with financing.
Houston, Dallas, Austin, San Antonio could all spring some nice derbies.

I was in Austin last summer and watched a few Gold Cup Games with their Outlaws chapter. They averaged around 200 for those games. I agree with the comparison to Portland; it has that potential, although it's hard to tell for sure.

I think this is the right answer, just look at Portland.
I can see it now, Austin becomes the Texas hipster team, hipster Houston fans begin to flock to Austin and Dynamo becomes an all Mexican supports team.

I don't think comparison to Portland really works.
Portland had 23 years of pro soccer history with the NASL and USL Sounders teams.
Austin has... a few years of the Aztex in USL and now currently PDL?

The biggest hurdle for pro-franchises in Austin is San Antonio; and vice versa. The cities are only 60 miles of shitty I-35 apart, but remain in different TV markets. With the expansion of the Kyle-Buda-San Marcos-New Braunfels corridor, a combined Austin-San Antonio market would be massively appealing for all pro leagues.
Austin is not going to get a team before an already MLS-ready San Antonio without a stadium and fielding an amateur PDL side.
