I have recently been promoted to this new position and I don't have a clue what to expect! I will be trained by the 2 ladies who have been handling these duties for the past 20 years.

One of them buys raw materials only and the other finished goods. They have done this job mostly as an afterthought as it is not their primary function in the company.

They have been working together to fine tune a procedure for me to follow (we are ISO certified).

I will also be handling incoming freight traffic and costs.
I am just looking for any tips or advice you may have.

This is typically a very gravy job. You will be cutting POs to vendors for various services/products. It's so easy a caveman can do it. Good luck with the new gig.

I'm not quite sure what you expect people you don't know on a message board to provide as far as info about your job.

15 years ago I was a young guy starting out right out of college at a small company and knew nothing. A women who handled the purchasing got pregnant and was going to "retire" and she suggested they move me up to replace her and I did.

I've gradually learned at various companies to be a buyer and do everything from being an purchasing analyst to a heavy construction subcontract administrator . Have done some contract management work too.
It's a pretty interesting field to be in.

I suggest you see if you have a local active chapter of ISM(formerly NAPM). Sign up and go to meetings. Get a certification through them.

Good luck.

Well, I'm not looking for specifics about my job but purchasing in general.

Thanks for the info on the ISM. I will look into that.

Get busy with Microsoft Excel if you are not yet fluent. It can help you solve complex algebraic questions when buying or evaluating goods or services. I've got Excel spreadsheets (autocorrect originally changed it to "spearhead sheets"???) for as many parts of my responsibilities as I can, purchasing being one of them.

PS: Please don't try to use spearhead sheets in lieu of spreadsheets.
