Perceived weakness in Eastern Europe not new for US

When it comes to confrontation with Russia, not getting engaged militarily is nothing new for the US. A lot of folks are comparing events in Ukraine with the Cuban missile that JFK faced.
I think a better analog is the 1956 Hungarian revolt, which reflected badly on President Eisenhower and the US. Leading up to the revolt the US was using propaganda via radio and using buzzwords like "liberation" and "freedom" and whether intentional or not, many in Hungary felt misled. Eisenhower was caught with his pants down and backed away like a whipped puppy.
Was it weakness or pragmatism? I think he did the right thing in not engaging militarily and the wrong thing in giving the Hungarians the idea that the US would be there to support their "liberation", much like George H.W. Bush did with Iraqis at the end of the Gulf War.
The result was that 30,000 Hungarians died and the US sent relief supplies only. Sounds familiar? (Actually, sound a lot worse than the Ukrainian situation)
By the way, Ike was no community organizer, but was previously the Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in Europe. Nonetheless, many felt like he lost a huge PR battle with the Soviets.

The Soviets were not impressed with the help the USA gave Hungary. In fact, they were rather contemptuousus. In a newspaper interview in 1957, Khrushchev commented "support by United States ... is rather in the nature of the support that the rope gives to a hanged man.

President Eisenhower of USA said "I feel with the Hungarian people." J F Dulles, American Secretary of State, said "To all those suffering under communist slavery, let us say you can count on us." But America did nothing more.

Stop making excuses for Obama.
That's the media's job.
That's the media's job.

I pretty much figured my post would fall on deaf ears. The hatred of Obama by many on this board is very interesting. Eisenhower 1956 = Obama 2014. In the case of Hungary, the General was as impotent as Community Organizer, maybe moreso considering his military experience.

Well this changes everything, Obama for a third term!

Any thread on this board that undermines right-wing talking points, is always met with either silence or deflection, but never concession on the point being made.

There are some on here that see this goes far beyond Obama, BUT the libs here are taking up for Obama on mistakes that he certainly has made to exacerbate the issue.

At least in honest. I readily admit that I have OFS. Obama Fatigue Syndrome.
He's awful. But of course, I know the drill, trackie. He's really an awesome POTUS, but we can't see it because he's black.
I saved you a post, trackfan.

The only mistake that I can see that Obama has made with regards to Ukraine is make the threats that he did on Friday. When you're trying to talk someone down off the ledge, you don't threaten them. However, I'm in total agreement with him on doing nothing, which is exactly what Ike did in 1956.

Your problems go much deeper than that. The only thing Obama could ever do to make you happy is change the color of his skin.

But he did do something, telegraphed a willingness to be more flexible after the election and also took the missile defense shield off the table. Yea that is nothing!

What am I supposed to like about Obama?
His 20 year relationship with a pos like Jeremiah Wright?
His out of control spending that has added $7 trillion to the national debt?
His race-baiting behavior, including wrongly interjecting himself into the Cambridge Police situation, or the Trayvon Martin trial?
His use of the IRS to target and harass conservatives?
His signature piece of legislation, Obamacare, where he lied to people about being able to keep their plans and/or their doctors?
You're lucky you have that race card, bro, because you sure as hell can't defend his record. Race is what matters to YOU, dude.
Edit - Forgot to mention his attempt to prop up the radical Muslim Brotherhood all over the Middle East, and inside his own Administration at Homeland Security.
