I am taking my son to DC for Easter weekend. Where to stay close to the Smithsonian museums?
Which airport to fly into?
Rent a car or use mass transit?

It is a quick weekend trip to hit the museums, capital, monuments. Places to eat would be good too.

Fly into Reagan (DCA)
Use the Metro
What's your hotel budget?

I wouldn't rent a car. The last time I was there, I walked around the city.

Walking and the metro should get you just about anywhere as far as the main tourist attractions.

MSY has direct flights to DCA. Do that and then metro everywhere

how many nights are you staying and what is your hotel budget like?

Just stay at the White House, pretty sure Barrack and crew will be on one of their vacations at our expense.

Smithsonian, Holocaust Museum, the Newseum, the C&O Canal, the White House and Capitol and other historic buildings in our Nation's Capitol. I'd rent a car if your budget allows.

Ask a Gumper; this subject was portrayed in "Forrest Gump".

Horrible time to go in terms of visitors. Great time of year though. Just be ready for tons of people.

Look further out on the Metro line for a hotel. You're gonna pay a premium for anything close to downtown. Try Rockville, MD - a decent area and had a metro station. Don't rent a car. You'll double the cost of your trip in parking/stop sign/stop light camera tickets alone.

Walking and the metro

This. If you drive you'll miss out on so many great things. The monuments and museums are so close that walking between them makes sense. Anything not in walking distance is covered by the metro, which is the best of any of the large cities. Very clean, safe, and routes that are simple to navigate.

Stay near Capital Circle. Do not rent a car + take the metro everywhere.

Pro tip: try to be at the museums when they open. You can cover so much more ground so much faster + you'll have more time to do whatever you want.

Dont have any recs but I went there when I was 11 or 12. Visited all of the government buildings including the WH. I had secret service yell at me bc I stepped over the chain fence that seperated a sidewalk from the grass all bc I was trying to get out of the way for some family to take a photo. The Smithsonian was really cool. Its amazing how much I remember of that trip 20 years later.

Trying to fly in Thurs night and fly out late Sunday. trying to stay under 200 a night. I am looking for convenience. I found the Holiday Inn Capital that is not too pricey.

Again, that hasn't been my experience.

I prefer October or around there. Cooler weather and not as many people.

Summers are a nightmare around the museums. I don't wish having to walk through a group of tourists at the smithsonian stop during the summer on my worst enemy

there are plenty of hotels in good locations for under 200

you can stay in Arlington right at the key bridge for around 100 and walk/metro everywhere

the Westin-Georgetown is 170ish a night, it's a block from my office and you can walk everywhere. it's very nice. the Fairmont is right there too and it's around the same price and very nice
