What should the breakdown of focus be for a president between foreign and domestic issues, optimally?

Should it be 50/50 or should it lean more heavily one direction over the other?

It seems that Obama and his "fundamentally change the country" promises were correct when you look at Obamacare, immigration policy, gay marriage issues and the like. It also seems that Obama views foreign relation matters as more of an inconvenience than a priority (though I admit I am biased in making that observation). He just does not seem to have a clue and it seems over and over again we are being forced to react on foreign policy issues as opposed to being proactive.

It seems his emphasis in more 80/20 when you balance domestic policy versus foreign policy.

What say you?

I think he should spend all of his time pushing his signature legislation past another election.

Answering the OP's question as a percentage of time is nearly impossible. Personally I believe the lion's share of the effort should be directed at our domestic problems while looking outward to see how foreign issues affect us domestically.

I think the answer is "depends" on what is going on in the world.

Though, I think Obama clearly has no interest in international/foreign matters.

Tin-Foil Hat / Alternative Analysis:

- Did "after the election, I will have more flexibility" really relate to missile defense talks?

- Does Obama really care what Putin does?

- Does Obama really care if Putin supposedly makes him look bad or weak?

It's often been discussed ... since Obama is so brilliant ... then are the results then either (a) incompetence, or (b) intended on purpose.

If he's so smart and so brilliant, how can it be (a) ?

So... you get this Ukraine business ... what could potentially happen?

- Spread/reemergence of authoritarianism / communism. Would this really bother Obama?

- U.S. looks weak / loses power? Would this really bother a man intent on "fundamentally" transforming America ?

- A lot of white people could be killed. Will Mr. Obama lose sleep over this?

He's bothered so much by this ... that he skips his intelligence briefings ?

He lets John Kerry go handle it and expects a "good" outcome ?

Personally, I get the impression that, like with a lot of things ... he really just doesn't give a rat's arse.

I'm betting the the message that was "transmitted to Vladimir" was as follows: "Leave this dude alone until he gets reelected. That is all he really cares about. Then, do what you want. Because he doesn't give a rat's arse."

That is certainly plausible...

I think he should play golf and blame Republicans on his failures.

The economy and defense of the nation should be holding hands dancing around the May pole. Everything else will be given priority at the due time that it deserves to be addressed by a President and his Cabinet.

#1 priority is defense of America
- Does having our troops stationed across the globe help protect America or our interest Economically?
*** I always wrestle with this one

#2 Border security (goes hand in hand with #1)

#3 Economy and Jobs

#4 Free Trade

#5 Social Vision

85-90% Domestic
10-15% Foreign

Many issues overlap though.

The principal, far and away #1 focus should be domestic issues pertinent to the country as a whole. There should be very little involvement of the president with issues that deal with small factions or groups within our society. That should rest solely with congress.

His/her focus should be the larger needs of the country, never the small.

Doesn't leave much time to squeeze in 18 holes each week.

He should play 9 holes a day.

I want the President to have some down time. I find 18 holes to be a bit much personally.

All of the responses in this thread so far have been good--entertaining, thoughful, or insightful. Hoping this response does not change that rarity, let me submit that the President America needs today needs to be focused entirely on restoring the Nation Our Founders created. That includes deconstructing the Leviathan it has become and honoring our true rights. He needs to eliminate false rights which impose obligations on others to affect them. He needs to scrap all of these multi-thousand page "free trade" treaties and engage the world in actual free trade.

Our Founders warned us about foreign entanglements, treaties and things like NATO and the UN. We ought heed those warnings. We need to defend our borders, not the globe. Without a welfare state, open immigration/borders would not be an issue.

Because our current President is a Mussolini style facist, the best thing he can be focused on is playing golf -- as suggested above. A legitimately American President needs to focus on deconstruction (esp the bureaucracy and the Federal Reserve), liberation, and establishing national and international free trade.

More importantly, We the People, through our state legislatures, need to convene a Constitution Convention to reassert Our Founding Principles, eliminating things like the income tax, Federal Reserve notes (in lieu of dollars), the ACA and all things tyrannical. The Federal Government has "forgotten its place" and needs to be compelled back into its proper constrained minimalist role.

"I (insert name) do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

That should be his only role.
