I'm bored, working night shift this week... I decide to search High School Football records because I was curious as to how many Trey Quinn broke... Only 1 (But number 2 nationally now in career receptions)... And I stumbled upon Mark Lairds name. He has the 5th highest YPC in one season in the history of High School Football (with at least 75 receptions) at 22.5 yards per.

It's crazy how athletic some of these kids are these days.

Carry on with your night.

If you ever watched him, you know he dominated on both sides of the ball. Outstanding athlete.

The fact he wasn't heavily recruited is an absolute joke. His numbers were insane and he only had a handful of offers.

I remember the thread on the recruiting board a couple of years ago about him not being heavily recruited... After seeing his ability on the diamond and his eye popping stats I have no clue why he wasn't a top recruit.

White & playing 1-A football was prob the reason he was looked over.

Name one DB that could shut him down in high school?

Except that 4.45 he ran at Bama camp would get many an offer when coupled with his stats. Kid was legit as legit gets. He's the biggest "Don't go to a small private school if you want to get an athletic scholarship" case I've seen. No one can touch his stats in baseball/football and he had to walk on at LSU. Sad

I still believe he would be an asset in the defensive backfield in football. I saw him play and dominate magnum in football and even the maghum jerks gave him a round of applause at games end.

Youre right JJ. I have a few buddies who went to OCS and then full rides to LSU but not skill guys. I guess that's where the problem was.

did the fact that he was being heavily recruited for baseball to LSU affect how we approached him in football?

My only concern would be his size.

Doesn't he weigh like 175-180?

Jermaine Sharp was 22 years ago. Also, his problem was fumbling. (sometimes untouched)

He wasn't heavily recruited by LSU in baseball or anybody else. Not even ULM and he played his whole career right under their nose. Craziness.

It's really not hard to figure out why Laird was not recruited to play big time football. He didn't fit the stereotype of big time skill guys in football. At 6' 1 175 lbs in high school running a 4.4 o 4.5 with one of the best vertical jumps in the state as a senior, this kid should have been able to pick where he wanted to go with these skills and the numbers he put up. Compare these numbers to ANY WR or DB on the recruiting list right now and tell me what the difference is in him and all of those on the list? Kid is a beast. He wasn't recruited big time for the same reason Quinn wasn't a 5 star.

I believe you are right. Kinda like if he was a running back.

There have been plenty of skill guys from the small school classes get signed. Heck our biggest basketball recruit was class B. Laird was skinny and missed some of the camp circuit with an injury. The camp deal was big for sec offers. Stevan Ridley was our starting rb and was mpsa. Ulm and tech missed on Laird big time.

I had seen last year he was rooming with either landry or odell or maybe both. But anyways he was all set to play football as a walk-on as a wr but like every year the baseball team has a couple of kids go to the draft so a scholarship opened up and he took it.

Haha this thread is funny

Did awful at camps and was shut down almost every time by the top guys. At one camp Diarse was guarding him and he failed to catch one pass.

Guys, do y'all really think you know more than those who have been doing this all of their lives and get paid millions for it?
