Best Supporting Actress in Aviator
Best Actress in Blue Jasmine

Aviator was a magnificent script written by John Logan (also wrote Gladiator and Any Given Sunday among others) and ok she was Katharine Hepburn and it was a role of a lifetime (much like DDL with Lincoln) for her in a beautifully crafted and directed biopic of Howard Hughes that Leo pretty much carried IMO.

Now she won last night for a movie that I thoroughly enjoyed (I'm a Woody Allen fan) but her performance didn't stand out to me but the script written by Allen was again magnificent.

I get the draw, she is tall and beautiful but no better actress than I think I've seen in any of the other films, the script was just so much better. Case in point Sandra Bullock.

Now I don't particularly like Bullock, but her acting job in Gravity was absolutely amazing and got a snub because Blanchett got the call from Woody Allen. I am glad they gave the Best Director to Cuaron for Gravity (he deserved it) I just wish the Academy would try to consider the scripts and directors a little more and a few more truly amazing performances would stand out I think.

What do you guys think?

People talk about movies like the Butler being Oscar bait, and it was.

But the character Woody Allen wrote for Blanchett was total Oscar bait, as well.

A broken down middle aged woman, who cries through an entire Woody Allen movie. I love Blanchett as an actress, but the Oscar was going to whoever took that role.

Personally I would've probably given the award to Amy Adams or Bullock. That could just be because i've seen American Hustle most recently, though.

Overall, I thought it was a down year for lead females. Lupita was better than any of the leads, imo.

Agreed, it might've been Allen's best screenplay about a strong female and her deliverance wasn't special by any means to me

Bullock was gripping, heart wrenching, and totally believable as a DAMN ASTRONAUT

Again don't like Bullock and I don't know why (probably should more) but she is one of the most underrated actresses today

Anytime Streep is on screen she should just have an obligatory Oscar that year. This year is no different.

I would have voted for Adams.

I think the Academy got confused on Blanchett's first Oscar and thought they were giving Kate her fifth posthumously.

See I thought Bullock was terrible and the worst part of that movie. The clip they showed at the oscars showed it. "Ahhh com'on!"

In her defense, that was a horrible clip to show, out of all the other incredible scenes that they could have chosen to go with.

Almost as if the Oscars hates Sandra B.

That's understandable. I guess for me it wasn't as much about her performance as it was the unbelievable character. She was a woman dealing with all these ghosts.... And never in 500000 years would NASA let someone like that into space. They go through plenty of evaluations and she would have never passed. So maybe i didn't dislike her as much as I was just mad at this "plot hole"

That's probably the best explanation of why I don't like her, she can get a bit annoying but I didn't feel that way about her in Gravity, not sure why but I think it had a lot to do with the way it was directed sort of like Travolta in Pulp Fiction can't stand him in hardly anything else

I guess I think that because she's won 1 Oscar and I thought she should've won this one this year

She always puts out quality performances despite picking shitty roles and movies sometimes. Gravity could've been way worse if she wasn't believable and to me she was very believable

Not any better than Amy Adams or any other good female actress could've done in that role IMO.

That's my point it was a beautifully written script with Scorsese directing and this role was again beautifully written and directed role by Woody Allen. Both Directors that are very hands on in crafting the characters.

I am definitely a Blanchett fan, but you could argue it was the role that did it this year for her. I would have been perfectly happy had Amy Adams or Judi Dench would have won.

Only role I haven't seen is Amy Adams' (couldn't get out to the theater when American Hustle was out...life stuff even though it was the one I probably wanted to see the most and will likely just buy it once it comes out)

Adams is always spot on

she shouldn't even have one. She got lucky the blind side came out in an awful year for female leads. All she did was act like a milf, what a stretch.

Agreed.

Its a travesty that she won an Oscar for that role, let alone then not win for Gravity.

Woody writes them, but he is famous for not giving much direction to his actors. Blanchett molded that character.

I read an article that Woody was pretty hands-on with her and had a vision of the character he wanted to portray...apparently it was one that was an emotional mess
