I really think international opinion will change if Russia fires the first shot with the intention of grabbing land for themselves.

Well, straight up, you are obviously correct.

But, the Ukraine likely has a much stronger armed force than our opponents in Afghanistan and those frickers are STILL a pain in our A$$ and will be in charge about 5 minutes after we leave.

Not like there isn't a blueprint for defense in such situations.

Seems like this is really an economic battle over expansion of Russian natural gas interests and abilities to control supplies to the EU and over control of the grain exported by Ukraine. China and much of the EU get large portions of their exports from the Ukraine. Could American grain exporters be the winners? Militarily Ukraine is obviously at a disadvantage here.
