Is Salman Khan (of Khan Academy) one of the smartest people in the world today?

Dude can teach anything from high school chemistry to anthropology to finance to astronomy to vector calculus and a thousand other subjects. How can someone be proficient is so many fields? If he is not the smartest guy on the planet, he is at least the most well rounded in terms of his sheer breadth of knowledge.

He is very intelligent.
But you seem to be making the false assumption that he enters these lessons cold, and gives them off the top of his head with no warning and no prep.
It's the information age. Just because many use it to post duckface images on Facebook or to look for the OT 10 doesn't mean it has no scholarly assets.
Anyone intelligent can spend just a couple of hours surfing a topic to be proficient at the entry/intermediate level. Actually doing so doesn't make you the smartest on the planet.
The tricky part (and his skill) is only moderately related to intelligence: being able to present that information in a relatable format that others can understand efficiently.
As an aside, he is from NO.

My wife is friends with him from high school. Very smart and very nice guy. Khan Academy is very interesting and I wish him best. The whole thing started with him using the internet to post study guides for (I think) a family member. Blew up to the point Bill Gates is a fan.

Intelligent no but likely the most incredibly well rounded from an academic pursuit standpoint

I tried to go to him for help during a few of my STEM courses in college.
Didn't find much help. Seems he would only be teaching the overview and I would always get frustrated at how easy his examples were.
Like others have said, he's well rounded, but not nearly one of the smartest people.

I don't know man. I have seen many of his finance and economics videos and his series on GMAT prep. He just comes across as somebody who has a real grasp of many subjects...not just on a superficial level.

The important note isn't that he is able to spout off about an array of different topics, but he is able to do so with very simple applications, and speaks very plainly about topics.
This is what makes Khan Academy great.

probably top 1,000
as far as him being able to communicate what he teaching, then he very well may be the top dog. Man gets people to understand concepts like no other.
quote:
Khan attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, graduating with a BS in mathematics, a BS in electrical engineering and computer science, and an MS in electrical engineering and computer science in 1998.[9] Khan was class president in his senior year.[10] Khan also holds an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School
and after getting the engineering degrees he said, frick it, I'm going to be financial analyst.

It is truly sad that this type of skill would be the last thing ever considered by a university when hiring a college teacher.

Universities currently only care about how much you can bring to the school in the form of government grants.

What does he have on investing?

I've watched a ton of his videos for school and fun and most of them are great. I used his science videos while studying for the MCAT.
