Guys,

One of my good friends is getting his doctorate in May and I'm looking for a good gift idea.

I would like to get him a nice, and good tasting bottle of spirits (Whiskey/Bourbon, Scotch)...something a long those lines but I'm open to any ideas.

I read through some of the Bourbon thread but 360+ pages is a little much.

Price really isn't an issue as long as its not egregious ($500 or less).

I have found some but, from my previous experiences, as many of yall have found as well I'm sure, expensive doesn't always mean the best.

Any ideas will be appreciated.

I'm no expert. but this shite is amazing....
Redbreast single still 12yr is retarded. about $90 i think. It is the best whiskey i've every had, you can drink that shite "neat" and not feel it going down... Its an irish whiskey. Amazing.
You can buy some scotch thats really nice as well.... Calandros has a nice selection of stuff you don't normally find. ask the guy to grab one on top... last bottle i got from there the poor kid knocked over like 5 bottles of whiskey b/c he wouldn't get a ladder. Smelled like a damn bar in there, a really really nice bar

Most of the really good bourbons you won't be able to find. Will be a lot easier to get your hands on a good bottle of scotch.

Something like this with his school of choice LINK
And a bottle of blantons, bookers or basil Hayden would be very nice.

For the record I keep 1 or all 3 in stock regulary along with Knob Creek Rye. All are delicious, but cannot hold up to the redbreast.

You're right about that...I have looked into some of the higjer rated and longer aged bourbons, no one has them.

Also considering putting together a sample pack of 4-5 high end but reasonably priced bottles.

Sample pack would be very nice. He gets to enjoy a variety of many bottles. I would probably prefer that myself.

If you go this route I'd go with:

4 roses single barrel
EH Taylor small batch or single barrel
Rock hill farm or blantons
Angels envy
Bookers
Jeffersons reserve

Any combination of those would be a solid gift. I recommend gong see Ben at Alexander's.

I like this idea. The high end bourbons are almost impossible to get on shelves. High end scotch is often high end because of rarity and not always taste. It would be cool to get a few bottles from one brand. Something like Balvenie 21 year or 17 year Doublewood then get some bottles like the 15 year Single Barrel, 14 year Carribean Rum Cask and 12 year Doublewood also. Several other brands you could do something similar with. Get great variety and don't risk getting one really expensive bottle they may or may not like.

Three of my personal favorites as well.

^^ This is kinda why I was leaning towards a handful of different brands...More booze and you don't feel like a dick for drinking it all in the end haha.

Thanks for all the great recommendations!

I know I'm gonna have a hard time shipping this off and not breaking them open for myself
