What a wonderful article this is

quote:

Why does Bitcoin specifically have this demographic makeup? Well, there’s a fair amount of privilege built directly into the currency: In order to buy the sometimes wildly expensive currency, Bitcoin users need to be wealthy. And they can afford to put their wealth into a currency that isn’t widely accepted or even recognized. Plus, they move easily through the financial and digital space — the process of “mining” bitcoins demands it; it is all about knowing coding and decryption and how to use an exchange. The sum total of these things — advanced knowledge of computer science, wealth — are also markings of the young, white male.

Wow. You literally know nothing about how the bitcoin community reaches out to the homeless, unbanked, and others suffering from poverty. Please see Bitcoin Not Bombs, Fr33 Aid, and Sean's Outpost Homeless Outreach. And how paternalistic can you be towards women of color? It's pretty terrible you are claiming that they need the government to lift them out of poverty.

Do yourself a favor and learn the difference between Bitcoin the protocol, bitcoin the currency, and BitCoin the unicorn. And btw, I am one of those "poor" women who dropped out of college due to financial burdens and self-educated on the workings of Bitcoin. You don't even need to come from the tech side to understand it.

As a Hispanic early adopter of Bitcoin, I am extremely offended by the author. She should find more productive uses for her white guilt than to attack a technology that has uplifted many people.of ALL races. The number 1 adopter is China. She should do her research.

normally, as a progressive, I enjoy thinkprogress opinion pieces but this may be the least informed opinion you've ever made....and is a real discredit to your sites integrity....for better information on the mt. gox situation...I recommend this interview of blockchain.info CSO, Andreas Antonopoulos.

quote:

"Despite being wronged by the system again and again, women and people of color actually don’t want a smaller government."'

That sums up the entire socialist (aka "Progressive") mindset. Government tries to fix something with laws and regulations, only to make the original "problem" worse. Then, they try and fix the new problems with even more laws and regulations. I'm going to get me some my Bitcoins now.

I think it's a good thing.

It reeks of desperation. It's a sign of weakness.
They know they are holding on their platform by a thread, and that the people are waking up to the facade that gov't is there to help and enrich the lives of the average American.

And, to your point about female journalists...it ain't just them. Turn on ESPN and the story will be about J Collins or M Sam. I welcome the onslaught of media propaganda, because it shows real desperation.
