Why the hell don't we just do this? Neither is a threat to anyone anymore.

I'm pretty sure we're not keeping them from doing anything, their constitutions are.
I think the Dutch & French & Koreans have more skin in the game.

I was under the impression that there were still some UN rules that required that their militaries only have defensive roles.

With the way the requests of Germans in the EU are being ignored by the likes of shitheads like Italy, Greece, and Portugal, they may very well soon say frick it and go all nationalist again on everyone.
Japan - Yeah, they're not a threat anymore. They'd probably build some bad arse Mech warrior-type military robots, though.

IMO, Japan has more than defensive capability.
But, I doubt they could go invade anyone.

UN rules
The UN has no real power or authority other than the threat of sanctions. They can threaten military action, but all but 2(US and UK) of the member countries prefer a "backup" role. If we support Japan and Germany rearming, UK will back us and the UN can only whine and cry.

Neither of them really want a worldwide military capability. They've figured out that the real power is economic. Something we would do well to figure out also.

Japan will build a fleet of Metal Gears

Japan has amphibious assault ships already.

That's it. The Japanese NEED to build the Megazord from Power Rangers.

They really don't have offensive capability but they have a decent Air Force and a small, well equipped army. I suspect those are growing.

Should have done it along time ago.

Sure, and we'll crush the shite out of that with something American made...

Germany is all in on the EU..they are actually shrinking their military and have, in the last 5 years or so, done away with the requirement for every 18 year old to serve in the military. Germany has seen the light....the EU is their ticket to ruling Europe....the ticket the world is willing to allow them to cash in. What wars have failed to accomplish for Germany in the past is happening even as we speak politically and the German people know it full well and are happy as a lark about it....and the rest or Europe knows it also. The transformation is not immediate and without some going backwards from time to time but make no mistake it is going to happen to the betterment of Europe....

Amen to the A Men... preach it brother.
I remember a movie once where the US was planning to invade Canada where a Russian ambassador told the President of the US (Played by Allen Alda) that the US had won the cold war...Russia was no longer interested in playing....and that the US would have to find someone else to be enemies with because Russia was now in business to make money.

I found the quotes...
"Mr. President, please. Is this why you called us here? We already gave up! You won! We are too busy trying to perfect universal indoor plumbing!.....You're in charge of the world, now. Don't be such a sore winner! "
The movie was "Canadian Bacon"....pretty shitty movie but it had its moments. By the way it was the first (and only) non-documentary film Michael Moore ever made....

Militarily speaking, Japan is already pretty bad arse. They are well armed and very well trained. And they have lots of really geeky smart people here too.
