You don't think he'll be pissed if he gets tagged as a TE?

Ravens just signed Dennis Pitta to a 5 yr/32M contract as well. 6.2M/year or so and many would probably say Pitta is only a top 7-10 TE in the league. I don't think that helps us any in negotiations.

Must be waiting for the salary cap to go up more so they can really pay him.

He knew he was getting tagged as soon as his camp put out they were seeking 12 mil a year.

We're also not tagging him as a tightend. We just inform the league that we're tagging Graham, and they decide what position he'll be tagged as based on last year's snaps.

Jimmy wants this to be seen by an arbitrator because that's his best chance of getting WR money, and that can't happen unless he's tagged.

Jimmy is happy right now.

Corry also said it's possible the arbitrator could rule the Saints botched their shot at the franchise tag by designating Graham the wrong position and therefore missing the deadline, which would make Graham a free agent -- resulting in the worst-case scenario for the organization.

Except the saints aren't the one's designating his position.

Yea, you're right. I didn't see it like that, or realized completely that's how it worked. In that case, he's probably jumping up and down because there's no way, based on where he lined up, that they tag him as a TE. I heard a stat that was like he only put his hand in the ground 6 snaps/game last season, all others he was lined up outside...He wins.

It's based on last year's snaps. I've heard conflicting reports, but I here he lined out wide just under 50%.

I think a big point of contention could be the slot position. Technically a wide receiver is lined up out wide and not in the slot. I think they even had a different designation for slot receivers(or I could just be misremembering).

And then there is the argument that tight ends have been lining up outside for years(ala Tony G) and that it doesn't make them a wide receiver just because they're put out wide at times.

On the flipside, wide receivers never(or extremely rarely) line up tight against the line. Being that Jimmy has lined up against the line quite often, and was out wide for under half of his snaps, the Saints have a really good argument.

It really is going to come down to what one person's(the arbitrator's) opinion on the matter is and both arguments are pretty compelling so really this is far from clear cut.

I think its a issue that needs clarification but do it during the owners meetings and not on the back of any one franchise.
