Bitcoin exchange Mt. Gox said it was filing for bankruptcy protection and that 750,000 of its customers' bitcoins and 100,000 of its own had been lost.
At market prices charted by the CoinDesk bitcoin index, that would represent a loss of $473 million.

Give me the Federal Reserve and the FDIC any day of the week.

A fool and his money are soon parted.

How can you lose something that never existed?

Is this real debt or virtual debt?

If it's virtual, I think you only need to restart your computer.

If it one one group that stole them all, would it go down as the biggest heist in history? 850,000 coins at ~$500 would be $425,000,000.

Can you imagine if those who stole the Bitcoins had the temerity to sell them on the MtGOX exchange? They could then steal them again, and take further advantage of MtGOX's lack of controls. Meanwhile, MtGOX was inadvertently helping them convert from Bitcoins to some useful currency, AKA fencing the stolen property, and aiding their getaway.

With adequate time it should be possible to determine which Bitcoins were purloined and when based on analysis of the blockchain. Covering your tracks to obscure ownership of 850,000 Bitcoins would require significant discipline and attention to detail. You would have to avoid patterns that traffic analysis would detect in transfers to and from specific public addresses. You would almost have to have an evasion plan going in to avoid after the fact detection.

This is a story that could make an interesting book once more becomes known about how it was done, and the steps taken to determine who did it.

Probably to shadowy eastern European hackers.

And in other news, gunmen in uniforms without insignia have taken over government facilities in Crimea. Get your tin foil ready.

I don't know if there is a connection or not but wiki has been MIA for a while and there is a thread on the OT-Lounge Board that says 9 bankers have committed suicide recently, one by shooting himself multiple times with a nail gun.

Coincidence??? I report, you decide...

Could be. Last time I saw him he was over in Japan demanding his bitcoins. Video evidence below.

ETA: But seriously, Wiki, come back!

I don't know everyone's personal info, but are you implying that wiki is a banker?

No, wiki hates bankers. He's made that pretty clear on here.
