Well this is interesting.....

LINK

The Super Bowl has only been moved once in 1993 and guess where it was supposed to be then...

quote:

In 1990 as now, the location of the NFL’s title game played a big role in a political decision. The NFL decided then to move the 1993 Super Bowl because of Arizona’s refusal to make Martin Luther King Day an official state holiday. Instead, Super Bowl XXVII was played in Los Angeles, the runner-up when the game’s site was chosen.

They do things as they believe to be right. The NFL says F-U to that and believes they should be policing every State's political ways. That's what's actually quite disturbing to me. And yes, this is now not going to happend due to the veto, but it is appalling that the NFL gets involved in politics like this

@Hoodoo man

They introduced and passed a bill (which was later vetoed) stating that businesses can refuse to allow gay ppl to enter their establishments.

I'm as pro traditional marriage and conservative as it gets and even I thought this was a bad idea.

And after the backlash, the politicians in AZ actually said "we didn't know that gays had money and spent money in AZ".

I'm sure you can imagine the field day the media had with that.

I don't see it that way, MDS.

The NFL can do whatever it wants, but they can't police AZ at all.
They can just decide to take their business elsewhere.

AZ must have known how controversial this would be.
Their choice.

So you're saying a business enters a contract with a State, then that State passes a law which in turn that business makes clear that if that law proceeds to be passed they will cancel that contract... and this is not the NFL policing a State's politics? Then what the hell is it? I'm not here to discuss the merits of the law itself. That is completely irrelevant when it comes to the NFL.

This is an issue of the NFL pulling out of a contract with a State, after much revenue and planning has been spent, over a law that they don't like. That's scary.

The Super Bowl curse is real guys. We don't want it here until the Brees era is over.

they have their own interests to worry about. They don't want the negative PR backlash and possible loss of viewership

I imagine the contract has provisions for extenuating circumstances.

Regardless, this isn't what I care about.
I was expressing surprise that AZ thought this was a good idea at all.

their citizens were completely against the bill and actually support same sex marriage.

The bill really doesn't change the current law at all, just reemphasizes it

Bill got vetoed.

Think it would have absolutely been moved had the governor signed it into law. Silly Arizona.

you make a fair point, but that's not what this was about. they stated that they disagreed with the law and that they were considering pulling out the superbowl if it were passed. the moment they start making their decisions of where the Superbowl will be played based on their political beliefs is the moment they are no longer a business but rather a political activist and lobbyist group.

Any state that is threatened like this by the NFL should stop funding their free venues for just the NFL activities. Shut off the lights, furlough stadium staff for the events, and stop giving any incentives to keep the team in that state. Let the NFL/the teams front the cash for the logistics and let them leave. A private interest has no business dictating state laws - it's even worse than congressional lobbies in my opinion. Sickening.

You'd think they'd be more grateful to their host considering they basically get so much incentive to just be there. Let them piss off enough states and they'll eventually go out of business or restructure their corporate entity. Goodell's lawyerism and political interest is ruining this professional sport.
