Each year my company hosts an event for customers before OTC here in Houston. Evey year we have a decently nice giveaway item for the attendees of said event. The best I have seen, for this year, is one of those portable charging stations. In the past we have done

What's your price range?
Obviously, you want something that will leave the event with them, not get tossed or immediately used then tossed.

It also depends on who you're targeting for the giveaways. I've got stuff before that would just look retarded in my office so I gave to my kids. The most used though is probably thumbdrives and pens to be honest. But those are super cheap.
It would really help if I knew what type of event you were talking about. I know a couple of companies that have things like poker night in conjunction with OTC and they have some great giveaways.

We host a BBQ at the Houston Zoo the Saturday before OTC each year. Customers come with their families and we have sno cones, face painting, caricature artist plus some animals they can pet. Also booze and live musics for adults.

We give out some little scales for luggage that have a measuring tape on them. THey are cheap and people love them, have our logo on them. Good move if you clients travel alot imo.

For around $50/each maybe laptop bags with your logo or a leather folio with room for ipad in it (logo'd of course). I have one from Aramco that I love but it doesn't have room for my ipad.
Those would work for office types and also the travelling salesman types.

Most companies have these already and employees have them. That's why I didn't suggest golf balls or t-shirts either as most companies have those and they're not too special.

We have done high quality shaded safety/sunglasses glasses with our company logo on the arm that are a huge hit. Besides the tee shirts, caps, windbreakers, folio etc...the safety glasses are used regularly and I see them all the time. We gave them away to key accounts over 3 years ago.
