Ugandan Tabloid Publishes List of 'Top' Homosexuals

Given the attitude in Africa towards gays, this is practically a life sentence for those named in the article. Life is about to get unpleasant for these people.

A tabloid in Uganda printed a front-page story Tuesday of the nation's "200 top" homosexuals, one day after the president there signed a strict anti-gay bill into law.
Under the headline "EXPOSED!", the Red Pepper newspaper published names and some pictures of people who are allegedly gay, including some Ugandans who had not publicly identified themselves as homosexuals.
A popular Ugandan hip-hop star, a Catholic priest and Uganda gay activists were among those on the list. A retired Anglican cleric and others who support gay rights were listed as sympathizers.
It's not the first time gay Ugandans have been called out in print. A similar list was published in 2011 by a now-defunct tabloid that demanded gays be executed.
The law passed Monday in Uganda punishes gay sex with up to life in jail. Initially, the bill proposed the death penalty for "aggravated homosexuality" — repeated gay sex between consulting adults and acts involving a minor, a disabled person, or where one partner has HIV. First-time offenders also face life in jail.

Anglican Christianity in Africa is very conservative, and of course Islam is very unfriendly toward gays as well, but I don't think this is just a religious issue. I have a friends who live in Gambia, Mali, Malawi, South Africa, and Senegal, and a sister-in-law who lives in Nigeria. They all say the same thing, that Africa is a hostile environment for gays. It is deeply imbedded in African culture.

Scott Lively and his fellow cohorts in the U.S. must be so happy their efforts have come to fruition.

I dont believe it. I was told by the NYT that the south is the most homophobic racist place in the world.

quote:Do you realize how incredibly racist that statement is? It implies that Ugandans are a bunch of thoughtless simpletons who have no opinion of their own until some smart white people ride in to tell the poor souls what they should think.

Trust me, Ugandan attitudes about gays were formed long before Scott Lively was even born.
Blacks oppose gay marriage more than any other group in America. Blacks in Africa are even more fervent in their attitudes about gays.

His statement wasn't racist...why play that card. Lively did go down there and fan the flame. Not sure if this is what he wanted but he did want some criminalization.

can we all pitch in to send Toddy to Uganda?

His statement wasn't racist
quote:Fanned the flame, yes. But to imply that this wouldn't have happened without the intervention of America whites, as Toddy has done numerous times on this board, is either naïve or disingenuous. Anyone who has lived in a foreign country, as I have, knows that sovereign govts don't cater to the whims of foreigners who are guests in their country. The US govt might have the power to influence policy, but Scott Lively? Give me a break.
Lively did go down there and fan the flame
ETA: I'm not saying Toddy is racist. Far from it. I'm saying the statement is, even though he doesn't intend it that way.

That may be so. But it is without doubt that Evangelical Christians from America are , in part, directly responsible for what is transpiring in Uganda. They also have played a LARGE role in Russia with the crafting of their "gay propaganda" laws. Heck, they even brag about it.

How about we send you and just tell them you're gay?

You're trying to hard to play the race card.

Those damn Christia...er, I mean Ugandans.

quote:Toddy, I gotta run but you and I see this very differently. And you know that I have a lot of love and a lot of respect for you. I think it's hard for people in your situation to be critical of blacks in their attitudes about gays because you see blacks as natural allies given their history of persecution. I get that. But the facts is that blacks, whether in the USA or Africa, are less with you than probably any other demographic. So you turn your attention to groups you see as your enemies, namely conservative whites and Evangelicals. To do so you unwittingly portray blacks as simple pawns at the mercy of clever whites.

I'd have a lot more sympathy for your animosity towards evangelicals if you would be more honest in your assessment of what is going on in Africa and in Russia. Africa is hard-core anti-gay, and that didn't start because some white evangelicals told them to feel that way. And Russia, btw, fwiw, is more homophobic than the USA ever thought about being.
That being said, I'm pulling for you.
