How different do we perceive Frank Underwood if he's a Yankee?

He's blatantly Southern, right down to the nearly constant references to South Carolina, his time at "The Sentinel" (what we can assume is the Citadel), and the Gafney peach tower hanging on the wall in his office.

Does this Southern charm make him sympathetic to us? Would we feel the same about FU if he were from Brooklyn or Vermont or Boston?

Honestly, I think part of the draw of the character is how Southern he is. For me, I think it's that he is so similar to Jim Williams, the character Spacey played in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (also upper class and gay/bizexual, btw), a book and movie which I love. That and Freddy seem to give me a regional connection to an otherwise non-Southern landscape.

He's a good mix as far as PC/Non-PC goes.

He's a Southerner, so the liberals see him as a villain.

He's a Democrat, so the conservatives see him as a villain.

A northern democrat would only piss off half of the people, same with a southern republican.

To be fair it's not like his politics are really liberal or anything. It's not like The West Wing. You kind of get the impression that Frank is a democrat bc he thought that was his best route to power, his politics are all about "ruthless pragmatism." If he was from the north he'd probably be a republican.

If you manage to dominate your district like he does, it's much easier to gain support from both parties if you're a southern democrat or northern republican

While I know that the shows are nowhere near comparable, Jed Bartlett was a liberal President from New Hampshire, and he seems to be a very well liked character. In fact, IIRC, he wasn't even supposed to be a major character in the series until Sorkin saw the reaction to the Pilot

I'm on episode 8. I'm trying to drag out the season and not watch it all at once.

I agree. I could relate to him because if his background and because I have known people who act and sound exactly like him. He did lose me with his three way and the implied relations with his classmate.

I'd say that has to help with the show's popularity with some that would be turned off by him. I actually never think about it though and don't think it would matter with most people. But if you live in the south, you probably know a politician similar to him so it probably has some effect.
