Didn't read the article...

...but wasn't this the Maersk Alabama that got held up off Cape Horn by the Somolian pirates?

That ship has bad mojo.

Pills are harder to get and we've been fighting a war in one of the largest heroin-producing regions in the world. Supply lines are open to fill the opiate void of the pills drying up. Better believe some former soldiers/contractors are running heroin from Afghanistan. Happened after Vietnam.

It definitely feels like it's everywhere now. Of course it's a bit of a domino effect of the pain pill epidemic, but hard drugs in general seem to retrend every other decade or so.

I worked in Djibouti for 80 days back in 2005, and I'd heard one specific contractor was having a hard time keeping its employees off the haironn. Heroin and hash are both so easily available in that part of the world. A LOT of Westerners doing contract work were into smoking Opium and Hash. It was just something no one wanted to talk about, and in a lot of cases it was just easier for people to obtain and use than alcohol was.

Heroin has made a huge comeback in Louisiana because of the prescription drug tracking policy we have in place here. It is next to impossible to doctor shop for pain pills and those who were hooked on them need an opiate fix so they have turned to morereadily available and cheaper heroin. I would rather they go back to pills as that, at least, generates some tax revenue and there are fewer needles involved.

Boyd Crowder is trying to move from Oxy to Mexican Brown up in Harlan County. He's an innovator. Always ahead of the curve.

That never even dawned on me about that possibly opening up a gateway to widespread heroin abuse.

I've been led to believe that most of it in the US is Mexican and getting brought in by the cartels

On C2C some one was talking about American troops (possibly private contractors) guarding poppy fields in Afghanistan.

This is pretty sad though, you'd think that the highly trained and presumably highly intelligent individuals would know better than to get into hard core drugs

Even the most motivated of the type A's can have a moment of weakness, and once is all it takes.

Also, heroin is like "THE" perfect drug for those types of people. The first time they feel that rush, it's the closest thing you can get to the natural highs a life of action normally provides. Not even to mention the appeal it has to someone needing to completely turn off and temporarily escape from their reality.

What does socioeconomic status or education level have to do with drug use? Only thing that changes is quality of drugs people used based on their means. There's billionaire CEOs and rocket scientists that use drugs too. Junkies gonna junkie.
