I'm leaving for Thailand in 3 days. I'll be visiting Bangkok, Ayutthaya, Chiang Mai, Phuket and Krabi.

Looking for restaurant recs. Can be upscale or hole in the wall.

Eat street food. Fine dining is a rip off there. There is so much good food in Thailand in nameless little corner shops or stands on the street. Thailand on the cheap is far superior to trying to spend a lot of money.

Skip Phuket, it's a dump. Get on the ferry to Phi Phi. The other side is awesome too, with Koh Tao, Koh Phangan.

My itinerary is 4 pages long. LOL I'm insane about planning. But I still would love to hear suggestions and the experience of others that have been. Sorry you're hating because you can't afford a trip like this.

UPT. Thanks!

Skipping Phuket isn't an option. It's all planned and paid for.

We actually have a full day planned in Phi Phi with a really small tour operator that was highly recommended to me by my boss. LINK

I really wanted to go to the other side too...but the trip is only 12 days with 3 of that being travel...so very limited.

Phuket is just a big tourist trap. A lot of Thai's and a lot of Middle Easterners. Get ready to see women in full Burka on the beach, it's a head trip. Phi Phi deserves more than a day. I can guarantee you that you'll get there and punch yourself in the nose a few times for making it a day trip. It's one of the most strikingly beautiful places on the planet and the pace of life is something to experience. There isn't a car on the whole island.

The best Thai food is going to be at the Markets. There's one in Bangkok that in my opinion is too big. The one in Chiang Mai is the best and the food is out of this world. I wish I could give you names but they're little stalls at the market. Just try one you see a lot of people at.

Rent a bike in Ayutthaya and bike around the ruins.

Parts of Chiang Mai are pretty tourist trappy but it's a cool old city. Just try to get out and see the country side up there.

Nicest people on the planet and the dollar goes a real long way. You can live like a king on the cheap or you can spend money just for the sake of spending money and not get much more.

Do not listen to this. Pattaya is a fricking creepy dump. I felt like I could get Hep from just breathing the air.

You're probably not very good at traveling.

Patara Elephant farm in Chiang Mai is worth the trip to Thailand alone. I also highly recommend A Lot of Thai cooking school in Chiang Mai if you are looking to do something along those lines.

I'd second that your time is better spent elsewhere than Phuket, but I'm sure you'll enjoy it too. Koh Lanta (roughly 2 hours drive from Krabi) was a nice relaxed place and wasn't overly touristy. Also, it is a great spot for Scuba Diving.

Street/casual food is definitely the way to go. We ate at a "nicer" restaurant one night in Chiang Mai, and both my wife and myself would have preferred to have just gone back to the night market. The exchange rate over there is great - you can eat like kings for $15 US.
