Our female hockey team...

...

Why is it the polar opposite of our female soccer team?

One is time and time again - clutch in the big moments and at the end of games...

And the other is time and time again...shits the bed in big games.

And why does the female hockey team get so much love (after these Olympics) constantly losing in the main event - but with American soccer - there would be hell to pay?

Why the difference?

I'm sorry, did the women's world cup team with the title last time, or did they get embarrassed by Japan?

The women won the Gold in London. Strangely, the Olympics are more prestigious than the WC for women, while the Olympics are a glorified youth tournament for the men.

re: Our female hockey team...

IMO the US womens hky team was out coached in the 3rd period – they sat back too much and were not aggressive enough. I think the real difference between the 2 teams was Dineen (the CDN coach) – he is a tested professional coach at the NHL level, had a plan and stuck to it. Skill wise the 2 teams are very similar and in the pressure of a final game, coaching, the team prep and personnel decisions were the difference. IMO USA hky needs to dissect how they lost 2 games to the CDNs in the Olympics when in recent world cups and “friendlies” they have a winning record vs the CDNs.

The reffing on the final game was a disappointment – they were way too much of an influence on the outcome, the first 2 penalties in OT should not have been called and the last penalty was questionable but when you take away a scoring chance it is generally called. With better positioning by the ref she may not have called a penalty.

Their is a reason a 2 goal lead in hockey is the worst to protect. I had no problem with Katey Stone and the 3rd period, 2 goal lead red line dump make them goal the whole ice to beat you. Take an odd man rush when it's given. Just coaching philosophies I guess. If they keep the foot on the pedal and forecheck like the first period and give up an odd man rush to let Canada back in at 2-1 she would have been questioned over that too. Canada got a bounce of the puck to make it 2-1, then a post with an empty net and then the usa goalie lets the puck to the front of the net to tie it. You praise Dineen but if he doesn't get the bounce on the first goal and then the post is he getting hammered by Canadiens?

The ref situation in women's hockey has to change. One women official can't keep up with the US/Canadiens, calling game from behind. Either put a guy in stripes or out two women out there. The three calls in ot were all questionable to me, first one was a hit yes, but the Canadien girl was clearing the side of the net in ot, I wouldn't have called it.. Now the "slash" to the goalie pads before any whistle was blown was quite possibly one of the worst calls I have ever seen, a clear makeup call out of the air. If you are calling the first penalty have some stones and stick with it, the second us penalty was a penalty IMO not a penalty shot but a penalty, thing is it would have never happened had she not called the first "slash" against us.

I disagree about getting a bounce to make it a 2 – 1. The US had a turnover at near CDN blueline (they didn’t get it deep) then a pass off the boards in the neutral to CDN F, and the US D then gave the blue line away too easily and a quality chance developed which the canucks capitalized on. At that time the CDNs had a very short bench and the US didn’t seem to handle the top 6 CDN F’s well. The post was lucky but it also is a bad play as the US panicked and cleared the puck too hard and if it goes in for a MT net they are heroines but the smart play is to clear the puck so you don’t ice it. The icing allowed Dineen to call a timeout, set up a play in the US zone.

Also the CDN tender beat the US tender – esp early on in OT, the US ad 2 very good chances to score and were stopped.

They had a big bounce of the puck off Jenner, its part of the game so many big goals are ugly, but it was a good bounce of the puck for Canada whether or not they had a good rush. Not sure the puck off the post was really a panick play, two players digging for the puck around a linesman and it happened to almost go in. The rest of the clears that resulted in icing after 2-1 were panicked, and pretty much dumb hockey the way Canada was dominating faceoffs.

Not a fan of 4-4 ot for the gold medal game. No sour grapes either, if anything 4-4 favored US speed on big ice, just rather see a gold medal game have a chance to finish the way its supposed to be played. 2nd ot and on maybe 4-4 but not the first 20.

I can live w the 4 on 4 in OT but play until you have a winnner no matter how many OTs it takes - its the final game, it not like there is a tyke team in 2 hrs that needs the ice .......
Shootouts are a joke in the medal round and should be thrown out for the GM game.

Canada has dominated the US at the Olympics but teh US has a much better record in annual world championships - they are very evenly matched teams, that is why I think in teh Olympics the CDN coaches tweak things just enough to win

re: Our female hockey team...

Here's my pseudo-historical analytical take:

In soccer title IX puts gives the US a decided advantage over all traditionally strong soccer countries. Moreover, a lot of the "soccer countries" may not be as devoted to women sports as the US. I'm pretty sure countries in South and Central America are pretty patriarchal. Same with countries like Spain and Portugal. Even England I don't think is really known for women athletes.

In Hockey, a lot of the countries that are "hockey" countries are either Nordic or Germanic. I'm pretty sure those countries have more of a tradition of things like women warriors and women in active roles in general. I think I heard one time that community property originated in Germanic countries because they had a tradition of women participating in things like battles, etc. Thus, the "hockey countries" may emphasize women sports and women's hockey more.

Ok, all of that may or may not be accurate but that's my take.

Losing in PK's is hardly the same as getting embarrassed. You must be thinking of the Brazil loss.
