Netflix reaches deal with Comcast

NEW YORK (AP) — Netflix has reached a deal with Comcast to ensure that its TV shows and movies are streamed smoothly to households, the first deal the online video streaming service has reached with an Internet service provider.

The two companies said in a joint statement Sunday they're establishing a more direct connection to provide a better service to customers that will also allow for future growth in Netflix traffic. The companies say the arrangement is already giving customers a better experience.

Netflix had 33 million U.S. streaming subscribers at the start of the year and accounts for about one third of all traffic at peak times on the Internet, according to research firm Sandvine. As the video steaming company has grown, Internet service providers like Comcast have pushed the company for more structured deals to enable its content to be transmitted smoothly and reduce the strain on their networks.

While the companies did not disclose the terms of the deal, Netflix investors will want to know how much this deal will affect the company's bottom line and whether the costs will be passed on customers. Netflix has been resisting paying fees to Internet companies and this deal could open the door to similar agreements with other providers.

Netflix is already experimenting with different rate plans that charge slightly more for households that want to stream its shows and movies on four different screens simultaneously.

The deal comes after months of collaboration with Comcast though Netflix will receive no preferential network treatment under the multi-year deal, the statement said.

Comcast was ranked as the 14th fastest Internet service provider in January, according to a table on Netflix's website. By connecting directly to Comcast's network, Netflix should be able to boost the quality and speed of its video streaming as it adds more customers and prepares to start streaming its content in the ultra high definition format this spring.

Other large Internet companies such as Google already pay broadband providers a fee to enable more direct connections.

Comcast is the nation's number-one pay TV and Internet provider under its XFINITY brand. The company said earlier this month that it had agreed to acquire Time Warner Cable for $42.5 billion in stock.

I actually see this as a bad thing. They did this with one company so now others will want in on similar deals. It also doesn't seem to bode well for Amazon Prime or Hulu either.

Ugh. Netflix can be bullied, not a good sign.

Netflix continues to make terrible business decisions.

20 years from now, people will be saying, "remember back when there was Netflix?"

Especially from a company as terrible as Comcast. Seriously, name a worse company than them?

Netflix has already been doing this with other cable companies for a while, it's just not public.

It's win/win, customer gets great netflix quality and it cuts back on the providers backbone.

I've been expecting a price increase from Netflix for a while, seems like that event is imminent now.

Same with HBOGo, which is why you can't get it with every provider.

Hopefully Google fiber will be available in most places one day. That will probably the only way to fight back against these big cable companies.

They've had an agreement with Virgin over here since fall.

This is so cute if you think you'll see that day. Not to mention the fact that they have no interest in rural areas and they are picking areas that are low cost high reward.

And I'm sure years ago everyone laughed at the idea of the internet being available in every home too. And I remember when cell phones were exclusively for the wealthy too.

Seriously you know nothing of telephony if you make this comparison. Besides the fact that both technologies you mention jumped on already existing networks.

Have you even bothered to look at their coverage area? I'll update you, it's tiny. They may keep expanding, but you won't see it unless you live in a densely populated area with cheap costs to drop in fiber.

Also, if you hate sifting through advertisements now on the web, just wait when google has all of your internet information for all your traffic.

Not saying that it will happen, but you can't make a definite statement saying that it won't. According to you, I may just be too ignorant to realize it.

Neither. One of the articles I read on it suggested what actually happened is a middle man between NetFlix and Comcast was cut out. So NetFlix saved money and Comcast made more money by establishing a more direct relationship. I suppose that could be seen as a win in the sense that the cable company in this case is happy to be just the pipe and NetFlix cut cost on content delivery. I would consider the package Comcast recently started offering of 10 basic channels + Internet + HBO more of a cable cutting win than this.
