Could OKC be better without Westbrook?

Some guys on sports talk radio we're saying that RW takes too much away from KD's game.
That the team was better without RW.
Is that a possibility? Seems like they'd be better with their All-Star PG on the floor

I think KD is so good he doesnt need a guy on his team who jacks it up, regardless of how good he is.
I like the thunder without him

If he's gonna go back to taking more shots than KD, they are probably better without him, but if he does what's best for the team they are better with him.

Well considering last year's playoffs id say no

He should come off the bench imo

OKC wouldn't be better by just subtracting Westbrook. But I've always felt OKC and Durant would be better if they traded Westbrook for one or two quality complimentary pieces.

did you not see what happened in the playoffs when he went down

Is this a serious question?

In the playoffs teams would just key in hard on Durant and the Thunder would struggle. Just like last year.

They should have let Westbrook go and kept Harden.

Durant has elevated his game since last year.

Remember, before the Thunder did so well without him this year, they went 5-5 right after his injury.
They learned how to play without him, and they played some great basketball.
I think Durant is so good that having a player like Westbrook get the amount of touches he does takes away some of what Durant does and makes the team not as good as they could be as a result.
I think the team is better with Westbrook only if Westbrook takes on a smaller role so that Durant can have a larger role. Because when Westbrook is playing, Durant's role shrinks. Durant's role should be maximized.

Excellent article from grantland discussing this same debate.

According to the data, this season the team’s two most common lineups feature Durant, Serge Ibaka, Thabo Sefolosha, and Kendrick Perkins. However, the most common lineup features Reggie Jackson at the point, while the other has Westbrook there. Westbrook has played 287 minutes with these guys and, surprisingly, opponents have outscored that unit by 7.5 points per 100 possessions. That’s bad. Jackson has played with those same four guys for 525 minutes; they have outscored opponents by 6.4 points per 100 possessions. That’s good.

Westbrook is a below-average shooter, especially as a jump shooter, and it becomes hard to justify — from an analytical point of view — his propensity to shoot near the elbows or above the break. This is where the opportunity costs arise: Many of Westbrook’s pull-up jumpers could instead be a Durant iso play or an Ibaka pick-and-pop. Durant is one of the most efficient scorers in the world, and when Westbrook is on the court he gets fewer touches and his usage goes down.

While the pro-Westbrook camp can’t lean on many analytical facts from this year to support their case, its reasoning is no less persuasive. The NBA changes in the playoffs, and regular-season analytics might not be the best predictors of postseason performances. There are no bad teams in the playoffs. In fact, the Western Conference playoffs this year will feature only very, very good basketball teams. Eliminating Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph in a seven-game series in May is a different challenge than besting the Milwaukee Bucks in January. Simply put, with Jackson as their point guard, the Thunder were an easy out in last year’s playoffs.
