Deveining shrimp - Is it an insult to keep it?

I'm watching an episode of Chopped right now. The first round is shrimp, olive loaf, corn chips, and collard greens. Only one person removed the vein from the shrimp. The judges acted like it was the end of the world that the vein was left in the other shrimp. Like that's all they could talk about. Am I crazy, or is this a non-issue? I prefer shrimp without a vein, but it's not a deal breaker, and their "jumbo" shrimp were not that jumbo enough to really matter anyways.

What's up with these guys and gal? Have I just been tempered by living on the Gulf Coast for a decade? Or is the vein that big of an issue to people? Or maybe it's just tv and they needed something to bitch about?

Depends on size of shrimp

Presentation is better without it , but I don't see how anyone could taste the diffence on a medium or smaller shrimp

My guess is that for the show, it's all about presentation, and the vein doesn't look as pretty.

That said, I devein even small shrimp because I personally think the veins are nasty. If I'm served shrimp with veins in them, I'll even gently try to remove or scrape the black stuff off, but I won't make an obvious big deal about it.

Below is a screen grab of the shrimp. Hard to tell scale and I'm no good describing size by count. I'll relate it to some people by saying they were about the size of the shrimp you find in the ice container by the fishmonger counters in Rouses in New Orleans, which I sometimes de-vein and sometimes don't.

In a cooking competition I would for sure devein those

At my house I would probably devein those unless I really felt lazy

If I were to get those somewhere and they were not deveined, I would,d eat and not worry about it

It takes forever. After I have peeled and deveined a couple of pounds of shrimp, I don't even want them anymore.

I think I have seen this episode if it was when the guy judge basically said it was disgusting to leave the vein in.

I have been heavily criticized here for not deveining.

I look and decide. I would always devein Jumbo shrimp and also hardly ever buy them because I don't always like the way they taste. I prefer the taste of medium or large. Sometimes large need deveining and sometimes they don't. I always go back to oysters and ask people how they devein an oyster. They eat the same stuff shrimp eat and have the same alimentary tract. It's OK to deny that, but it doesn't make it any less true.

I never devein shrimp no matter the size and when growing up neither did my parents. I am not turned off by the taste and can’t taste a difference either so if a restaurant doesn’t I won’t turn my nose up. Also on the topic of deveing, I know several people who will devein each and every boiled crawfish which drives crazy.

Exactly.

I devein large shrimp, but it really depends on the dish. I sure as he'll don't devein them when I make BBQ shrimp.

Last Essence Fest, I had a lady ask to speak to me about her food. I get to the table and she is holding up a large boiled shrimp and waving it at me. I ask her what the problem is and she laughs in my face and says, "I don't eat nothing that is filled with boo-boo."
I have a bag of general responses to guests that may have issues with their food, not so much with this one. I asked her to repeat herself and apologized for the issue and promptly took away the boo-boo filled shrimp. Chefs and servers still call it "boo-boo" when people request de-veined shrimp.
