I've never done this for any of my pets, but I think it's recognizing the impact pets can have on one's life.

I didn't do anything that elaborate, but I did go to a local stone company and pick out a flat rock and had them carve my dog's name and birth/death year on it. Cost me $75.
My dogs are very important to me, they greet me every day when I get home from work with a wag. I miss it when I am traveling.

Nice, if that is your kind of thing....I would rather mark with something a little less fancy, though...

I just had to put one of mine down. They made a clay mold of his paw and cremated him for me. I will spread his ashes this summer.

Our 15 yr old cat dies this past January and we buried her in the back yard. We bought a stone cat curled up asleep and put it on top and will plant bulbs to bloom spring, summer, and fall
