Can someone explain why Windows 8 experience is so jarring?

MS wants you to use the Metro interface. So assume I don't turn it off (I know you can boot straight to desktop) and use it in the default mode it comes in.
Now if I open Word or Excel from the Metro tiled homepage, why in the world does it switch to desktop mode? Then when I hit the windows button it brings me back to the home page, but there is not a single indication that I have a Word/Excel file open elsewhere because there is no task bar that shows the open programs. I feel that a lack of task bar is a glaring omission on a desktop OS where you could be working multiple programs at the same time. They either need to add a task bar to the tiled metro home screen or completely eliminate the desktop mode and force users to use metro all the time if that indeed is the future of Windows to eliminate this jarring experience of jumping back and forth.
Tell me if there is something wrong with my work flow or I am using it wrong. I love working on the latest versions of SW, so booting straight to desktop is sort of chickening out and I don't want to do it. MS obviously wants people to use Metro UI. Show me how to do this seamlessly while multitasking.

Metro is basically the same DOS-type shell people were using in the 80s, where you jump back and forth between full-screen modal menu and full-screen modal program. It's just terrible.

I'm not reading all that
I'm just letting everyone know it's terrible!!!

I can't tell if I hate Windows 8 because it sucks, or if I hate it because I'm getting old. Is this how it happened with the older generations?

I like it.
Take some time to learn it and familiarize yourself with it, and it is a great OS.

Windows 8 came already installed on the new Toshiba laptop I bought a few months ago. I hated it then and still hate it. I exclusively use the regular Desktop version. I have figured out how to do what I want to do, but Windows 7 was so much easier to use. Windows 8 made a huge mistake trying to make one interface for all devices. If I was not so proficient in Excel, I would switch to a Mac since I love any other Apple device I encounter.

I think you mean Microsoft.
And I think Microsoft made a great idea in making one interface for all devices. I fully believe that is the way of the future.

Windows 8 looks like it was made for old people to use. It just terrible

Do you have a touchscreen? This makes Windows 8 infinitely more useable.
As for no task bar, I'll just swipe between the desktop and Metro. It's pretty easy to check if something is up. You can also split screen or Alt+Tab to cycle through all open programs/desktop. I love W8.

they couldn't have picked a worse interface to use on all their devices though

Businesses.
No business wants to use Windows 8. That is blatantly obvious.

There are free downloads that will make it act like win7.
I had to put this on my father in laws new laptop a few months ago.
He was happy.

just make the desktop your default and download Classic Shell.

The MetroUI is really busy and definitely can be/needs to be improved upon. But I think Microsoft is on the right path with that.
