Hogs With .22lr

I've never been hog hunting. We don't have many up here. But there's a pretty good pocket of them on a WMA nearby. I think I'm going to head over there Sunday and try to ambush one. But, on WMA's, we can only use weapons for whatever is in season. Right now, that's small game. So I'm limited to the trusty old Marlin 60.
Am I going to die? I have zero experience with hogs. I know people kill them with .22's. I'm going to try it, so don't tell me too many horror stories. I guess I just want you guys to tell me I'm not going to get gutted by a hog.
I've read I should shoot just behind the ear.

The only shot on a hog that will kill it with a 22LR will be in the brain box. That spot is not accessible from the front with a 22 due to the thick bone and large sinus cavity. If you are stalking in on them the odds of getting that ear hole shot from the side is small to none.
Make sure you carry some other form of weapon with you if you are dead set on doing this. 99% of the time a hog is going to run, but an injured hog will at times turn and try to attack.

Nah. I wouldn't try a face shot on a 100 pound pig though. Find you a mess of little 20 pound pigglets and lay waste.

I wouldn't take a 75 yard shot at one and expect it to drop in its tracks...

FWIW, I have killed hundreds of hogs. I have killed many with a 22LR. I would not stalk hogs with a 22.

Somebody needs to come out with a .357 magnum rimfire

Well I might not even see any. I did see a lot of sign over there last year though.
I won't try to shoot a huge one, and I plan to only take side shots at the ear area.

Like the air gun Benjamin Marauder in .357?

Hold yourself to those limits and you should be good. I would carry a 4-6 inch fixed blade knife with you where you can get to it easily.
Hogs are not color blind wear camo
They have great sense of smell use the wind
Contrary to popular belief they have good eye sight and hearing but when moving in a sounder they make lots of cover noise
Good luck

Can't you also hunt with any of the high velocity .17's and .22's? I'm sure you can.
Also, see if the WMA doesn't offer a special spring season hunt for hogs that allows larger weapons (Coosa WMA does this i know).

Yeah, we can hunt small game with shotguns, but only with #2 shot or smaller.

thanks for the tips!
And for anyone suggesting different guns, I'm not going to go buy a .17 or anything else for one day of pig hunting. Maybe if I fall in love with hog hunting, but my real plan is to hunt them with my longbow eventually.

#2 lead with a full choke at close enough distance can be effective if its not too big of a hog

I love the stick bows. Too bad you are a bama fan. We have some things in common

I wouldn't use a .22 on a bug hog, but 20-30# or less it should be fine. I've killed a couple with my .17HMR. Got a .22 mag for this exact purpose. Pretend to be small game hunting while looking for hogs.

Just put it on him behind the ear and don't stop shooting until he's down. One shot in the ear should do it, but if you miss keeping shooting

17 would do better but a 22 will do the job. I wouldn't be concerned about one charging. They run like hell when scared.

If you see a hog start shooting and don't stop till he is dead or the target is no longer in plain view. I've killed several with a .22 with this approach.
Will the bird not catch a hog?
