Pistol for wife (I know, this again), thoughts on 22mag revolver

My wife is deathly scared or a gun, or most things in general. The last time she shot my 10/22, she closed her eyes, turned her head 90 degrees to the side, then pulled the trigger. But, for some reason I would like to help her over come these fears and get her comfortable with shooting. My latest thought was to get one of these 22 mag LCR's. I realize it doesn't have near the stopping power, but I figure if someone is being shot at, they will probably turn around regardless. My only issue is the reliability of the rimfire. Thoughts?

Sounds like she needs to start with a pellet pistol/rifle until she gets more comfortable. That is the way I started many years ago.

Is a .380 an option? A quick search showed several that go cheaper than $449

Good idea, I'll get the gamo out for her to start with.

I've got a .380 semi-auto that she can't pull the slide back on. So I decided to go with a revolver, and then somehow started liking the idea of 22mag.

Just a thought: let your wife take a class with a professional instructor. I'm not trying to insult you, but maybe she would respond better with someone she doesn't know.

Being around loved ones can make people more nervous about guns. You may very well be a distraction for her.

Just a thought.

My wife carries the Ruger SR22. A unreliable rimfire is 10x better then the alternatives. But I would try to get her comfortable with shooting before laying down money on a gun for her.

If she won't shoot a 10/22, she'll have a hell of a time shooting a 22 revolver. It's just more bang and felt recoil

Not a bad idea at all. If she's ready, I'll see who I can find.

And, like I said, it has nothing to do with you and your knowledge about guns. Some people just get really anxious when they are with people they love. To them, if something goes wrong, their loved ones could get hurt.

As weird as it sounds, having her go to an instructor takes that edge off.

I was looking, and it looked like the 22mag is typically 40 grains at almost 2000 ft/s, the 380 is 90 grains, at around 1100. Seems to me that the smaller faster bullet would be better if the total energy is about the same??

why force her into something she does not feel comfortable with, does she have any desire to shoot a gun? If she has the desire and is just afraid of them then like others said get her some lessons, but if she has no desire...don't force it, just an accident waiting to happen

You could get a heritage rough rider short barrel birds head grip in .22 and .22 mag for about half of the cost of the LCR.

Mine can't rack a slide very well and doesn't like the feel when it cycles as she's shooting. I had a heavier Ruger 9mm (P95) but she preferred her ultra light snubbie .38 special. Revolvers seem to be the way to go for a wife gun.

my wife used to not be able to pull the slide back. I showed her how to grab it more with your palm instead of trying to use two fingers and let her practice without a mag in there. she can rack it like a champ now
