The 2nd Amendment may have been penned with several reasons in mind, but one reason it was NOT written was the taking up of arms against elected officials of the United States government.

Look at the reactions of the Founders to Shay's Rebellion before the Constitution, and the Whiskey Rebellion after the Constitution was signed, to name two, that influenced how those guys felt about the necessity of citizens having guns.

You can make a very strong case for the citizens having guns to defend ourselves against a foreign government, or one that is looking to overthrow the United States government, but the argument of having guns to defend ourselves against our own elected officials was never the intention of the Founders.

just b/c our founding fathers were hypocrites doesn't mean that's not the meaning behind the 2A

I had similar thoughts today when is saw the photo in page 1 of the WSJ with the protester armed with a slingshot.

These are just a few quotes from ONE of the Founders. It seems pretty clear to me that they thought armed rebellion against government may one day be necessary.

As SFP said, they weren't above hypocrisy... See slavery, the Louisiana Purchase, etc.

Liberals want everybody to either register their weapons, that way the government knows who has them, or they want the weapons to be placed in a certain area for militia purposes, an area which the government knows about.

The problem is the liberals don't realize that the tyrannical government is the potential tyrannical enemy that is behind the logic of the 2nd Amendment, which we derived from the English Rights of Man. Or I guess they do realize it but just figure they'll be on the side of the tyrants.

Really is hilarious.

Just exactly what IS the meaning of statements made by "hypocrites" supposed to mean? So, I guess I have to ask: What, pray tell, is the REAL meaning of the 2nd Amendment as written by hypocrites?

So, I am assuming that you figure that the Founders were all for guys showing up at the courthouse with arms because they had been "wronged" somehow? Yes, of course these men of The Enlightenment (I probably have to explain that to you), just a figured that if you's don't like what the gubment is doin you just take a bunch of packin locals to the gubment and demand they'ens change?

Really? That was called "The Civil War", and it was fought 150 years ago. I can quote Lincoln until the ol' cows come home, but I'm a guessin' he's not on your top list of 'mericans, right?
