A few of the small towns have "Cajun" mardi gras runs on Tuesday. Lafayette has generic parades

the lafayette mardi gras is the same as new orleans' except it is just done on a much smaller scale...nice family-oriented mardi gras parades...

and unless things have changed, nothing shuts down for mardi gras in lafayette...it is actually generates a lot of business for the local merchants...

Lafayette is not Cajun Mardi Gras. It's a tamer New Orleans style Mardi Gras. I would definitely recommend trying to catch the Queen's Parade Lundi Gras night and the King's Parade on Mardi Gras Day. BJ's Pizza is a good spot to grab some grub on the parade route. It's right at Cajundome @ Johnston across from The King's Tent, the Ice Gators will be there getting hammered in the Parking Lot.

If you want Cajun Mardi Gras, go to one of the small towns like Kaplin, Churchpoint, or Mamou

Lafayette mardi gras is pretty generic.. Thrown together floats with drunk people tossing beads. Definitely not New Orleans, more of like a smaller Metairie mardi gras. If you want to full experience in Cajun country, going to some of the smaller towns as suggested is the thing to do.

Lafayette has a nice Mardi Gras but don't expect anything that resembles N.O. The weekend night parades are probably the nicest with the most throws, if thats what you are going for. The cops here put up barricades all along the route which make the parade safer for the kids, but less enjoyable. The smaller towns around Lafayette have a pretty basic Mardi Gras with small truck floats. I've never done the Courier de Mardi Gras (Church Point/Eunice), the city folk I know that have were disappointed.

The hassle factor (traffic, parking, thugs) is about 20% of the N.O. Mardi Gras.

And yes Lafayette pretty much shuts down on Tuesday.
