Why is the AR so much more popular thn the mini-14 in modern times? Is it because of all of the yuppie modular attachments the AR has? Why don't people like a good old fashioned wooden mini-14? What are your thoughts?

Cause two different designs and the simple fact the .mil uses one and not the other.

Magazines cost more for mini-14 and the AR is more ergonomic and customizable. Also i believe the AR is more reliable and easier to maintain. Both are great rifles though and i wouldn't turn down a mini-14 for a decent price.

Millions of us have been trained by Uncle Sam to use the M16 and/or M4 - these are essentially identical to the AR-15 and other civilian variants, with the exception of select fire capability.

Now, I can't speak for those who never served - but for those of us who have, that familiarity and hundreds of hours of training/experience explains the popularity of the platform with us. It appears no more complicated than that.

Buffer system in the AR is a fairly massive advantage as well.

I was trained on an M14 but I don't own one of those.

The Mini-14 is a great gun. I might even say the ultimate truck gun

Lack of accuracy by the Mini-14 and limited calibers made the AR-15 an easy decision.

You could say it's the ultimate "ranch rifle"...

Fwiw, I know this board shames people shooting deer with calibers smaller than a .270, but I killed my first 5 deer with a mini 14. Lost none...

I recently acquired a Ruger mini14 in with some other guns from my MIL that belonged to my wife's dad that passed away 19 years ago. It has the stainless steel barrel. I grabbed the .22 and left it in the safe last time I was there. Had I known it was so fricking hard to find .22 lr ammo at the time. I would have grabbed the mini 14 since .223 ammo has been available everywhere I have been.

I think that is the main reason. The Mini-14 is very reliable and much more simpler to maintain than an AR. AR's crap where they eat while Mini-14 actions were designed to be self cleaning. Mini-14 mags are more expensive, but you can buy a ton of magazines with the money you will save from buying an AR. AR's are easier to swap parts on and are generally more accurate, but they both will do one minute of man in a combat setting. While I like them both, I would part with my AR before my Mini. Then again I like good old fashion iron sights with no can openers and whatever else attached to my rifle.

AR-15 is more tacti-cool.

FWIW, I would take a Mini-30 over an AR for most situations.

A lot more millions were not trained by Uncle Sam than were, yet they all flock to Academy to get an AR. It's all marketing. And just because the military uses it does not make it a better design for your situation. If that were the case, we'd all be hunting in digital camouflage and Realtree camouflage and the rest of them would be unknown.

The ACTION(not the bore) is self cleaning meaning that it uses it's own gases to clean out residue rather than depositing more residue into the action like an AR's gas system.

My son killed his first 3 deer with a Mini-14 and all of them dropped in their tracks.

We ate with it, we slept with it, we took it everywhere we go. We are attached to that rifle like a spouse.
