Not a single legitimate study can find anything harmful about it.

The lethal dose of MSG is about 6x that of regular table salt.

And MSG is delicious.

For those of you that don't speak Chinese, what stink is saying is that Trader Joe's is running a special on MSG.

My doctor told me that MSG is actually better for you than salt. He told me that MSG gets a bad rap because some people are allergic to it. The people that are get the runs and throw up. I have a friend that got sick from eating KFC. She didn't know that MSG is the ingredient in their orginal recipe. She found out from her doctor that KFC uses MSG in most of their products. Some people are allergic to MSG just like some people can't tolerate milk, nuts, eggs, etc.

I don't know anything about the purported harmful effects of it or lack thereof, but I do know that if I eat something with MSG it screws my stomach up something fierce and makes me feel generally shitty.

Because its an additive for starters and it's pretty much sodium so it is affiliated with salt, swelling, fullness etc...

It's really a flavor enhancer and most people eat it without even knowing it. Chinese restaurants got a bad rap about 20 years ago because of their use of it. But 20 years ago eggs were the cause of everyones high cholesteral.

I'm pretty indifferent towards it. I don't cook with it but I don't ask if I'm eating eat. I don't think it is used as much as it was but it still is out there.

If a cook uses Accent, then that cook is actually using MSG. I always have Accent handy if I want to enhance the flavor of what I'm cooking. Sometimes I'll use Accent if a recipe calls for salt.

It's a common allergy in people, and it is also a major cause of migraines. If you suffer neither of these from ingesting it, then it has its advantages.

The effects of an allergy to it are not very kind. It approaches and anaphalactic(not good at all) shock in extreme cases.

I just don't like the way MSG makes me feel. My tongue swells a little & my stomach gets messed up after eating something with MSG in it. I can usually tell right away if a dish has it in it, my tongue gets tingly.

Correct.

quote:

Because its an additive for starters

But it occurs naturally in many foods you love, and the glutimates are the reason you love them.

This is the bottom line.
