There's just no reason for this to happen.

I know so many people who ride around in their cars and leave guns in their house even without the safety on

Kid dies from unintended self-inflicted gun shot

It wasn't a misplaced gun.

They should have brought their gun safe with them on their hunting trip?

WTF? Are you saying not to take your kids hunting or what? I thought this was going to be "kid found gun in dresser and shoots friend on accident." There is NOTHING wrong with letting a kid loose in the woods with a .22 to hunt squirrels IF you teach him right.

Ahhhhhh, sounds like he was hunting squirrels with his family. Not that he stumbled upon guns for no reason. Kid should of had better supervision/parents. Doesn't look like it has to do with locking up guns. He was learning to hunt....

Because kids cannot operate a safety?

Only my ready gun remains loaded. My ready gun is not locked up, because when I need it - I need it.

My kids were educated from a very early age (6) as to the dangers of firearms, finger off the trigger until ready to fire, and keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction.

I don't want to be all callus here, but accidents happen - kids get killed by drowning or falling in much, much, much greater numbers than with firearms, even counting all the baby bangers beefing with other gangs.

Key element here: Lack of effective parental and adult supervision

Guns are just one instrumentality.

This.

A 9 year old goes missing at 11am while hunting with relatives, and isn't found until 8:30 the next morning? Strange.

What does this have to do with locking up guns? Not that that is bad advice, but I'm not seeing a connection.

Well obviously not a direct connection. People are rather careless with their guns often is all.

Mine neither. Single action Colt clone, no transfer bar, leave one chamber empty for the pin to rest in. Cock it and fire. No kids in the house.

What good does it do if locked up?
Teach kids to respect firearms. Make them understand that they are made to kill and aren't to be played with.

It's a tragedy, but don't blame the gun.
