Interesting Trade Deadline Week wrinkle: Hearing Pelicans poised to receive Disabled Player Exception in $4 mil range for Ryan Anderson

I guess this coincides with us being able to take in additional salary to move EG.

We all assumed he was done this year, this just ends all doubt.

It certainly helps. It also speaks a lot that they applied for it, since the only use we'll have for it, presumably, is in a move over the next 2 days.

So...this could get interesting.

So that means they can bring in $4 million extra just for this season.

Funny you mention that because some "insider" on the Rockets board mentioned some deal for EG.

You're allowed to take back the outgoing salary + $5m ($19.3m).

For the Disable Player Exception:
quote:

If this exception is granted, the team can acquire one player, via either trade or free agent signing, to replace the disabled player:

The team may sign a free agent for one season only, for 50% of the disabled player's salary or the amount of the Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level exception, whichever is less.
The team may trade for a player in the last season of his contract only (including any option years), who is making no more than 50% plus $100,000 of the disabled player's salary, or the amount of the Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level exception plus $100,000, whichever is less.

So it can't be coupled with another player in a trade.

You can do coordinated deals... One agreement to do 2 trades.

Does this mean we can use the $4 mil disabled payer exception with the $3 mil MLE?

Or am I wrong? I'm not a salary cap guru

No and no. The MLE is an exception for signing players into cap space that doesn't exist. This is for trading players into cap space that doesn't exist. Like a team that is looking to cut a player to save on taxes, ie Jordan Hill of the Lakers.

Totally different things. This basically means that we can trade the exception for an expiring player with a salary of up to $4.25M. I would assume we'd have to trade a future player as teams would have little incentive to just give us a player.

There's the incentive I was missing. We should start putting together a list of possibilities. What teams are tax-strapped and who would they be willing to part with?

Gotcha so this exception works for guys like T. Sefolosha, Jordan Hill, Jordan Hamilton, Patrick Patterson, Greg Monroe (seriously) who are on the last year of their contracts making less than 4.25 mil and that we need to trade for

Then the MLE is for free agents?

The bulls owners are always extremely cheap and are looking to cut salary.
