Looking to deduct the expense of a flight I took for a 2nd job I hold. I have the receipt and I paid for the flight back in November of 2013. I did not take the trip until January 2014. Do I claim the travel expense on my 2013 or 2014 taxes? Any help is appreciated. I tried looking it up but could'nt find what I was looking for.

I'm pretty sure if you use the cash system (rather than accrual) you deduct it in the year you spent the money.

I compare it to making a contribution for a non-profit in December although the contribution is for your next year's membership in the non-profit. You deduct the contribution in the year you paid it, not for the year of the membership.

Poodle can either verify or correct my statement.

If you're referring to wiki, not for few days. He posted in a thread on the Help Board about me "stalking" another poster but he seemed to disappear when an admin and Chicken didn't seem to agree with him.

He chimed in the thread and was pissed that I used the initial of his first name (not his name, mind you, just the first letter of his name) last year in a post and said it proved I had stalked him and learned his name....blah, blah, blah.

I and another poster reminded wiki in that thread that he had used his real name as his screen name for the first year or so that he posted on TigerDroppings so anyone who has been around for a while knows his name.

Never a dull moment on TigerDroppings!!! It's one of the reasons TD.com is the best message board on the interwebz!
