My lawn is getting out of control thick. I've pretty much got to cut it on the highest setting. I'm planning to de-thatch this spring, but I've read that you have to be careful with St. Augustine. Anyone ever done it before in South Louisiana? Is there a best time to do it (March, April, May)? Trying to get the front lawn in shape since we will be selling at the end of the year, and I don't want to end up destroying my lawn.

Hmmm. Get ahead of it early in the year, and mow more than every two weeks.

Be careful. May be better of chopping it down real low right before green up.

I mow every 4 to 5 days in the summer. The shite is thick. If I cut any lower, I get the brown circles from the blade in my yard.

Any lower than max? Something strange about that. Mine is pretty thick, and I can get to about mid way on my Toro with no issue if I mow every 9 days or so during peak.

Top two settings are okay(5 or 6 settings). Next step lower doesn't look good at all. Any lower and the grass is brown. When I edge, my grass is probably 3+ inches higher than my sidewalk right after cutting. And I don't bag, so I know there's a good bit of thatch in there.

Grass looks great after I cut, but when its so thick, it is hell to push through. Plus I think it would be healthier if it thinned out a bit.

It's most likely because you're cutting more than 1/3 of the grass height

If you do it several times it will look bette

Houma area. I want to continue to leave the grass a little taller. It looks much better than cutting it down to the dirt. But there is definitely a good layer of thatch in there . It makes the lawn a lot more "spongy" and hard to push.

Get it down low now. Stay ahead of it as it greens up.

The grass at my old house was exactly like that. Even a 7hp mower had trouble cutting it. Rented a de-thatcher and was able to cut it much easier. Looked a lot better too

Was it St. Augustine? I read you have to make sure the machine is set up to be able to handle it. If the blades are to close, you destroy all the runners and the grass could get taken over by weeds easily. If I ask my local rental company, I'm pretty sure they'll have no idea.

I have accidentally killed large portions of my yard before. Every time, the St Aug came back with a vengeance and replaced whatever had come up.

I know it will come back, but I want it looking as good as possible come September for resale reasons. I've got a pretty bad Dallis Grass problem, and I don't want that shite taking over this summer. That's another reason I have to cut more than once a week.

Hate that crap. I just use roundup, and don't worry about the St. Aug that dies in the process. It comes back fast. You can pull it, but it's a huge pain and ground needs to be soft. I get Bahia from time to time too.

Yup. I used a riding lawn mower and it had trouble.

I was gone for 2 weeks, and had my buddy come cut it right before I got back. He has a lawn care business and has good equipment. His stuff had a hard enough time for him to tell me he wouldn't ever cut it again

You can probably find the height for the de-thatcher online

Bagging will not help keep thatch out.
