I'm renting a car out of Houston (IAH) for a couple of weeks. Anyone got any recommendations for or against certain rental car companies?

I've rented from IAH several times before with AVIS for work, but I'm not sure if there are cheaper options that are just as good. I'm mainly concerned about price and not getting fricked/haggled about some bullshite later (e.g. shitty service, trying to charge me for BS, etc.).

I'll be taking the car out of state into LA if that matters, but will be returning it to IAH.

I consistently use enterprise with zero problems and great service. Just deny any extra bells and whistles and decline the insurance (your current policy likely covers rentals anyway.)

Hope this helps.

I'm emerald executive with national and have zero complaints with them.

You can sign up for free and become an Emerald member. This will allow you to skip any bullshite lines and just hop in a car and go.

You can get off cheaper if you go to Priceline and decline everything (insurance, GPS, gas refill etc).

Even cheaper if you go to Priceline and name your own price

Sorry...Should have clarified.

Any I should avoid, and if so, why?

Carrentals.com They'll compare prices for all the companies and you don't have to put down a credit card.

I have nothing else to add, really. Hertz, Avis, Enterprise are more expensive, National/Alamo, maybe Budget are in the middle, Dollar, Thrifty etc. are the cheapies. As the price goes down, the amount of BS goes up. Long lines, bs fees.

Mrs. Sheep rented a 2013 Jetta from one of the lower end places (Thrifty) - no power locks, windows, etc.... and had to wait in a two hour line to get it.

I had a guy give me a bunch of shite about not having my gas receipt (machine wouldn't print.)

Long story short: we've had a couple below-par rental experiences this past year that made us swear off any but the top three.

National and Hertz are usually the top tier and have the best cars.

Avis/Budget would be next.
