The Pentecostal Snake-Handler was bitten, allegedly, nine times, previously.
Wouldn't that build up sufficient Immunity? Vague Details about his Death.

Is it even possible to build up immunity to neurotoxins?

I thought rattlesnake venom was a hemotoxin.

I think a lot of times those snakes are milked or stressed to the point that they don't bite and or are prone to a lot of dry bites.

the venom - while it works as a deterrent it is not really a defensive trait... it's main purpose is to kill food.

I'm no scientist, but I don't think the human body is capable of building a natural immunity to the neurotoxins found in snakes' venom. It isn't the same chemicals as a bee sting or a bug bite. That being said, some experimental vaccines exist where people have been known to survive upwards of 100 bites post-injection, but whether The Pentecostal Snake-Handler had been vaccinated is doubtful.

The guy from the old Miami snake house supposedly built up a tolerance and lived to be quite old, but I'm not sure what all snakes he was dealing with.

It is very possible to build up snake venom immunity depending on the type of venom. I have a friend here in AZ who makes his living milking rattlesnakes. He injects himself with a small amount of venom regularly to build immunity. I have seen him get bit with no effect

Originally rattlesnake antivenin was made by injecting horses with venom and then pulling the antibodies out of the horses blood.

Yes and no. Each of the venom toxins are peptide/protein in nature, so antibodies can and will be made. The issue with toxicity is dose-related. You would not make enough antibody to protect you from a full-grown eastern diamondback that released a high venom yield (400-900 mg). Some people have died from associated coagulopathies following the administration of as much as 10-12 vials of antivenin. The antivenin BTW is CroFab. It is derived from E&W Diamondback, Mojave Rattler, and Cottonmouth. Most of E. Diamondback venom consists of phosphodiesterase and crotalase, but there is a low molecular weight neurotoxin component that impedes neuromuscular transmission (mild paralysis, including breathing difficulties).
