Has CPM recruited for small ball? Size indicates so, but why no small ball?

Judging by size, we are definitely a small ball team. Comparing last year's lineup to some of the better offensive teams and CWS teams last year, we were extremely tiny. I know size isn't everything, but you gotta have a little more balance to the lineup.

ULL--------6'0 201
UCLA-------6'1 206
UNC--------6'1 192
IU---------6'1 207
USCe-------6'0 197
OrSt-------6'1 205

LSU- 5'11 185. Throw out Jones who was way above average and it is closer to 5'10 180.

I know this isn't the 90s, but if you're gonna keep recruiting tiny guys, your'e gonna have to play Augie Garrido ball.

What's interesting is this year's team is a little bigger. I wonder if PM is preparing for the new baseballs. Either that or we couldn't help but get bigger as we were as small as it gets.

Just out of curiosity why did you include them?

One of the better power hitting teams last year and they're the only other in-state school ranked.

Somebody mentioned their power in another thread, so I included them. Plus, since they're ranked and in=state, I figured it would be an interesting thing to look at. Not saying ULL is anywhere close to these teams' league or anything.

So 1" and 12 lbs matters when they are in HS? Come on man! They will get bigger and stronger throughout college . And you answered your own question , size isn't everything.

CPM has said himself that teams are forced to play small ball in this era. Im sure he has been focusing on that and then began recruiting differently once the news came out about the new balls.

Either way he has been getting the best of the best at almost every position. Whether they have power or not is probably secondary to CPM.

They're not in HS. These were the starting lineups last year of these teams.

And 1"/12 lbs is the closest to the next smallest team on the list, USCE, who does a great job playing small ball. If we're gonna compete with them, we need to play small ball. The funny thing is, both small ball expert teams (USCe/UCLA) are much bigger than us.

1"/12 lbs is a huge difference when it comes out to averaging 9 guys. But, the difference is more like 2"/20 lbs.

You play small ball in tough games , against really good pitching . Small ball doesn't mean you do it in every game . You have to see what guys can do.

Meeeeehhhhhhhhh, I'm not so sure about that.

We weren't even top 25 according to Baseball America.

Yes it does. If you're gonna recruit 5'8/5'9 165-175 lb guys, you have to be prepared to make that your strategy every game.

Of course, we've added a couple of bigger guys in Hale and Chinea and Dehart, so maybe PM is going back against that strategy in anticipation of the new balls.

Lost a shite ton of talent and still ranked in the top 5 or 10 in every poll. Im sure we must have had a shitty recruiting class then

Well considering our 3 smallest guys last year were our 3 best hitters, I'm not sure I would be so worried.

I didn't say it was a shitty recruiting class. I said it wasn't the "best at every position". The recruiting class is far from shitty. It just isn't elite.

Still ranked top 5 or 10 because of Nola, Bregman, Ibarra, and some decent pitching behind Nola in Glenn and new recruit Poche.

Size matters. Go read MLB scouting reports. Almost all of them mention size or size as a concern, etc. etc.

Now, does that mean a smaller player can't be a great or HOF player? No.

Just because Drew Brees has success as a 6'0/5'11 QB, doesn't mean that scouts don't want their QBs to be 6'3-6'5. It's because on average, most guys can't succeed at that size.

Okay bud.

So, if you recruit all 5'8-5'10 160-170 lb guys, you're going to choose not to play small ball every game? That makes no fricking sense.

Bregman, Katz, and Rhymes were our best hitters last year.

Not the smallest players on the team. That would be Ibarra, McMullen, and probably Stevenson.
