I know that it is way early to plan a crabbing trip but this is going to be my first summer doing it. When is the best time, what is the best method, and where is the best place. Have heard about using trot lines at grand isle in the surf between PVC poles. But what about baskets and nests.

Out west we have to go when it's cold as frick. But well worth the hassle.

Its a rumor that you can't crabs when its cold. My buddy went Fridayday in PAC and caught 9 dozen in an hour. Then went fishing.

Fishing a pa-lon on the beach is fun. You need a good bit of weight the keep you bait on the bottom though. My Pa-Pa use to run pa-lons out of a putt-putt on Lake Des Allemands. It was over 1,500' long.

We use nets and start going in July. Best bait is turkey necks by far. They stay on and last a while. Get an early start to beat the heat. Also a case of beer is mandatory. You will find kites early in the season. Throw them back. Not worth the time to peel. Peak is august/september

Me, my old man and my nephew go crabbing all the time. It's a place in Hackberry. The best times to go are late summer and right before November for us. Warm weather, lots of fun and lots of crabs. Like lsuson said, the best bait to use is turkey necks. They last a good while and stay on. Crabs always biting out there. Just don't keep your line down too long or they're gonna just chill at the bottom and feed on it. We use a net and just chill on the shack and prepare our lines. Use some white rope that costs maybe a dollar and some change. That along with some turkey necks. Throw that bad boy in there, and in no time they'll be swarming. They're some feisty little things. We only keep the males and throw the females and little ones back. The males give you hell when going to put em in the chest. Good eating too.

We sometimes spend about 1-2.5 hours out there crabbing. Consistenly bring in about 5-9 dozens depending on weather. We give most of them away though.

Also there's gators and fish but the gators never come within sight. Some huge alligator gar and they stay along shore so who knows what's in the deeper end.

x17- you need to have longer thread titles or your topics get deleted or anchored.

Something like "I need advice for a first time crabber"

Also please fix the title on the False River thread so it can be unanchored.

This is the best, plus you can surf fish for trout while you wait.

Bingo. My supervisor caught 7 dozen in just shy of an hour running nets out of PAC not but a week or two ago. IMO nets are easier if your gonna be on the bank.
