Rest in peace, John Fred Gourier of Catholic High. He loved baseball. Those "of a certain age" will understand what I mean. How many of you long-time Tiger fans went to at least one dance where he was playing?
Come to think of it, I wonder about the origin of the name Gourier Avenue. Could there be a connection?

I saw him play basketball in the mid/late 60's. He went on to play in college too, I think it was USL then. Saw his band play several times in the early r70's. They were great. John Fred & the Playboys were the best 60's band I ever heard. I saw the Uniques, The Meters, Aaron Neville, and The Basement Wall, Good years.

As true as this is, it's not even close to how great a baseball coach he was. I played Legion ball for him growing up. He forgot more baseball than most of us will ever know.

I believe that Gourrier Ave. is named for John Fred's father, Bat Gourrier, a long time coach in Baton Rouge.

TupeloTiger, I agree with you that John Fred and the Playboys were the best of all the '60's bands, for so many reasons. Lots of good times.
But I thought he went to Southeastern to play basketball.

Guy was my freshman coach at CHS. Best steal signal ever. His watch hand in the air. Freakin easy to remember.
