The Obama administration has beaten a monthly health insurance enrollment target for the first time, according to data released Wednesday showing that more than 1.14 million people signed up for health plans in January in the new insurance marketplace.

The latest enrollment data from the Obama administration show that 3.3 million people have signed up for private health insurance through federal and state insurance exchanges created under the Affordable Care Act. This figure represents all enrollment from Oct. 1 through Feb. 1. It includes both people who have and have not paid their first month's premium. Of those people, 1,146,100 selected their health insurance plans in January, meaning there was a 53 percent increase enrollment last month alone.

This makes January the first month that the Obama administration has beaten an enrollment target. Back in September, way before HealthCare.gov's botched launch, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services projected that 1,059,900 people would sign up for private health insurance in January.

The biggest takeaway here, probably, is that Obamacare is starting to look more and more like the law that the White House had hoped to launch -- not the one where technical glitches made it nearly impossible for shoppers to get in the door.

Mother Jones

We're like, almost back to 2009 levels of uninsured! Almost back to where we started before the bill was passed so we could find out what was in it!

Nothing can stop the pain train to progress, haters. #Forward #mittches

I didn't vote for obama, either time. And do not support his policies. I think obamacare is a steaming pile of dogshit, albeit for different reasons that most here.

But with that said, this appears to be a decent turnaround and they are moving it in the intended direction.

For our country, I hope obamacare works as I believe we are stuck with it. I have always been doubtful but Jan gives me an inkling of hope.

how are any of those charts good? So 1 month out of 4 beats the expected, and hallelujah?

Also, it is an absolute disaster that 70% of enrollees are older people.

THIS is actually why Dems wanted the bill in the first place. It was NEVER about insuring the uninsured. It was about giving another handout to a large number of people. The net effect of this bill is that not only does it insure previously uninsured people(theoretically), it also subsidizes people who were ALREADY frickING BUYING INSURANCE!!!

I see those are enrollment figures, but I wonder how many of those that enrolled have actually paid their premiums? This Ponzi scheme needs lots of healthy people PAYING premiums in order to make it work. Sales figures look great, but the collections report tells the real story.

I don't like being a cynic, but I don't trust any of these numbers.

It is laughable that you buy into any of the propaganda put out by this administration concerning Obamacare.

Let's talk when they reveal the number of paying enrollees and not figures that include people who selected a plan without making a payment.

... and how many will CONTINUE to pay their premiums when unexpected expenses arise (home repairs, auto repairs, rent increases, etc.) or after they realize how much the premiums have impacted their lifestyle and discretionary income spending. I'm guessing that there will be a significant number of "dropouts" after paying a few monthly premiums, with many of those hoping they will get prolonged
"grace periods" for making up the delinquent payments while their coverage continues.

Maybe I laid the sarcasm on too thick, but fWIW I do not support or buy into any of this.

I was just pointing out the absurd headline from Mother Jones.

How many enrollees have actually paid? Which is what matters even more.

How many young people have joined and paid? Which matters a the most.

The enrollment projection for January was about half of the projection for December and the target bumps up again in February.

I'm not sure why January's target is so much lower than the other months but I'm predicting that February's goal won't be met.

If you can't reach the goal, just move the goal post!
