I'm headed to BHM for a show... sked puts me in MEI appx noon tomorrow.

Specifically to Mr. MDog, does your list from last October still stand?

Also are the folks behind the lamented Chili House anywhere else, or are they long-gone?

quote:

Listed on order of recommendation:

Weidmann's Restaurant Downtown for seared tuna, steak. Good bar upstairs.

Rustler's Steakhouse on Old Highway 80 for steak and other stuff.

Thai Krei at 6661 North Hills Small, but Really Good Thai - No bar.

Hungry Heiffer on 14th street - raw oysters, burgers, beer, bar and chalkboard food.

Dobie's Ragin Cajun Across from Mugshots for Cajun, creole and bar Good burger and spicy Cajun. Owner cooked on oil rigs and the Cajun is good food. He is a good guy, too. My go to burger.

Mugshots for burgers sandwiches and beer on Poplar Springs just north of North Hills Drive

Buffalo Wild Wings on Old H-80 at I-20/59 - never been there.

Chunky Sholes Catfish on Old H-80 at Chunky River. Good catfish and beer.

Chain food junk. Chili's, Applebees, Cracker Barrel, Logan's Roadhouse, Olive Garden, Red Lobster, Taco Bell, Outback, O'Charley's, bla, bla, bla

Private Dining at Country Club Restaurants, but private - members only

Beer Joints all over town - enter at own risk. Have no idea of food quality.

There are two Vietnamese Gas Station places (Seafood Express)-(2000 H-39 Just North of the BMW Dealership & 3073 8th street) with wonderful shrimp, catfish and oyster PoBoys - equal to any I have had in New Orleans. Never had their chicken, but it is always selling well. One beside BMW dealership has a nice assortment of gas station beer in cooler. I will sit and eat mine in the dining areas of both places and have never been robbed or hassled, but I put out an air that tells folks I am a good (blessed) guy who leaves folks alone and that God/karma will get you if you try to rob me. They will put more fried shrimp on your Poboy than you can eat, so take six or seven off before tackling the sandwich and eat them separate. Tipping the counter help will win you a friend for life.

We have an assortment of good Mexican places in town. My go to for Tex/Mex is La Pinata at 816 18th avenue a block north of the I-20 frontage road. Ask at the hotel and they will point you toward it. Their chips and salsa are great as is the Carne Asada. They make a half gallon Margareta that will put you under the table. Lots of beer and other drinks I'm sure.

Someone listed Rhythm and Brews, so I won't. May be music there that night and beer, etc. Good safe place to hang as long as you leave the Red Necks alone. We have friends (band) who play there at times.

Thank you sir.

Weidmann's has been popular for half a dozen decades or more, but I've never been there.

My long time favorite place in Meridian (Chili House) is long gone.

I never eat lunch in Meridian - at work those hours and I do not work in Meridian just live here.

I would maybe give Weidmann's a shot for sit down, or Thai Krei, or Dobie's for Cajun or a pretty good burger.

After that, I would drive on to Tuscaloosa and go to Cypress Inn on the black Warrior River. Might do that anyway - only two hours past Meridian.

Thanks for the tips. Had my heart set on Chunky Shoals Fish Camp, but the only day they list for lunch is Sundays.

Powered on through to Birmingham & hit Cypress Inn on my way back. After getting my ears blasted at a great Lord Huron show, a peaceful lunch portion of catfish was just what I needed. Yes, the view across the river is of that school, but it's still very pretty.

I'm so sorry I didn't know. I would have recommended their pecan crusted catfish. I think it is one of the better things on their menu.

Sad that you had to drive past a pretty good Krystal on McFarland Blvd. to get there. Yes, I know where every Krystal within 150 miles of my house is located. At one time, there were two in Meridian. How a Krystal manages to go out of business is beyond my understanding.

Tuscaloosa is still a very sad place for me because of all of the tornado damage. Lots of good people died there that day. Others lost everything.

That does look pretty good though. Always liked Cypress Inn. It can get crowded at times though.

Good concert?

Now *that* is a great tip; gives me another Tuscaloosa option now that Costa's closed up.

It was a fun (and very loud) show that proved rock and roll is still alive, despite Nikki Sixx's stupid complaint that radio won't play any new band these days unless they have beards and banjos -- so therefore Motley Crue is going to quit. Uh huh. I'm was at least 30 years older than most of the crowd there, but still had a blast.

And to make the loop back to food: while reading an interview with the band, I found their favorite BHM meal is at Bogue's, an old "Southern" breakfast & lunch counter that I thought had closed years ago. Still quite alive and well.

Thanks again.
