Is LinkedIn worth it?

Anyone actually network on there? Seems like another version of Facebook and people are in a rush to get as many new connections as possible and do nothing with them. Are the business versions that you have to pay for worth it or a waste of time?

I network with my charming personality

It's slightly less of a waste of time than facebook

Yes

From my understanding, certain fields use it very well, while for others it's completely worthless.

I have gotten multiple job offers and a blog writing gig strictly from linked-in. Recruiters are able to search by things you display in your profile. It is only as good as the information you provide.
If you're in a stable long-term job, or a field with very limited applicants (doctors for example) it probably won't help you any, but if you're in a mid-career phase looking to take advantage of your own flexibility, it can be extremely advantageous.

This is the trend in seeing. I'm in medical sales, so emailing docs isn't gonna get you anywhere. I've emailed some of their nurses and set up appts, but nothing has come to fruition yet. Doesn't seem like a good avenue to get new business.

Good for IT. You can tell when coworkers are looking to go elsewhere by the rapid update of their profile. Good way to follow company news and link up with recruiters

well said....
I signed up for it and did ultimately reconnect with some professional aquaintances from the past...
have to say overall though, that unless you are looking for a job, all it is really good for is a bunch of spam from headhunters, etc.....

I'm not on it but from my understanding your profile can be found via google if someone searches your name. I don't like that

It's great for software engineers and people in high level director positions

I get solicited there very frequently, the problem is that virtually every one of them is for someone with between 2-6 years of experience and I've been in the industry for 15.
My conclusion is that if you're single digit years out of school it's a fine resource, otherwise not worth it.

Worth paying for or is still a facebookish site of crap where no one cares about networking and new business?

There's four types of linkedin accounts. The free one, business ($250 year), business plus ($500 yr), and executive ($1000 yr). More benefits and such, but do those benefits get you anywhere on there. Didn't know if anyone signed up for any of the premium plans.

I use the free version and get emails from recruiters on there regularly. I'm happy where I'm at right now, so i just delete them.

Hell I had no idea. I've cursorily signed into the free one. Seems all but useless for what I do.
