I told the boy grab his air rifle nail as many nasty-arse grackles as he could behind the house.

In the resultant pile of carcasses were a few red wing black birds.

How are they on the normal person edibility scale? ("normal person" as opposed to someone who thinks possum pie with nutria dick-cheese sauce is suitable for Christmas dinner)

A little less greasy than a grackle. More tender than a yellow hammer. Not as sweet as a robin. Not as bitter and blue jays or cardinals.

I wont say I've eaten a lot of red-wing blackbirds and robins but I would say eat them for sure

We never figured out how to make yellowhammer tender. A shame because they are pretty big. Never tried Pileated.

I heard it's similar to Ivory Billed.

I would think like anything else, all about how you cook it. If it is nasty, just add more hot sauce and gravy I guess

Thin layer of oil. Medium heat. Cover. Add water from time to time. Great gravy. I wish I would have had Cajun Power Garlic sauce back then.

Should this be moved to the food board?

Probably not as good as whooping crane but better than red cockaded woodpecker.

Me and my buddy would go wear some RW Black Birds out at my camp. You kill about 30-40 and then my pops would make Black Bird Jambalaya with Deer Sausage. Damn it was good!

As kids, we were always taught kill what you want...but eat what you kill...

that meant we had a large variety of birds we tried...

Killdeer
RWBB
Robins
crow
(some I'd rather not mention that like the swamp areas)
along with your normal fare of hunted birds...most all were dredged in flour and fried up...
