Brett Anderson did another review of R'evolution.
NOLA.com
4 beans.

I'm curious on everyone's thoughts on the review.

It feels like he's serving two masters.
First, talking in glowing terms about the atmosphere and a few of the dishes. Then he drops this nugget.
quote:

None of the cooking is less than competent. Some of it, particularly the steakhouse food and a few of the pastas and cured meats, suffers for being little more than that.

Feels like the equivalent of "I've never had a bad meal there."
I guess such is the life of being a food critic.

I know someone here recently had a good meal there. I haven't been in nearly a year, time for me to check back in.

Brett needs to take a writing class. That's one shitty paragraph right there.

I went for brunch a few weeks back. It was incredible. I had the death by gumbo, which was great, and something else i can't remember, maybe the grits and grillades, and they too were great. Incredibly filling.

I skimmed parts of it and it just seemed like a string of back-handed compliments. Disappointing.

A meal so incredible that you can only remember one thing you ate. Sounds incredible, truly.

Must have caught Folse on his one day in the restaurant since it opened. And even more, Folse was waiting tables!

This place seems to be all over the place with people in regards to expectations and reviews.

For as much money as they spent and all of the pre-opening marketing they did, I sure would have thought this would have been a 5 star hit that is booked solid 5 days a week.

Who was it that was talking to one of the bartenders there and she said her previous bartending job was at a TGI Friday's or something?

For the record, I enjoyed my one meal there. We had a few appetizers, including the death by gumbo, which were all excellent. Our pheasant and lobster gnocchi were top notch as well. The service was great- I mentioned off hand having a bad headache and they brought me a big thing of green tea on the house. I will say that the cocktails were not good, which brings me to my original question.

my review from last month

quote:

So...Revolution was awesome. That has to be the most expensive wine list in NOLA though, even Emerils but a solid selection.

The service was really what put them over the top, they went out of the way to cater to our every need. Offering to keep our leftovers in the fridge while we went to the show or even overnight among other things. I've never seen another NOLA restaurant try so hard without making you feel uncomfortable.

Got the Beer battered crab beignets, and fire roasted oysters for the table. Both were great.

Turtle soup with deviled eggs for my appetizer. Honestly, it was good but I didn't like this particularly recipe. I can't pin point why, but it was just a darker turtle soup then I like, whatever that means. Deviled eggs were solid though. Wish I had gotten the Death by gumbo, but didn't because of my entree.

Went with the Tryptich Quail which was recommended here and it did not disappoint. I couldn't finish it but it was great.

Other dish I enjoyed was the duck, it was a huge serving and prepared well.

The box of small chocolates/pastries at the end is a nice touch as well.

Will definitely put it on the annual rotation, but that wine list really makes it an expensive meal. Only bottle under a 100 I liked was the Girard Cab.

I've been a couple of times. I found it good, but nowhere near the grandiose hype. For the price, I've had much better meals in this city. Service is maybe the best in the city; but, everything else was slightly underwhelming.
And, I agree about Anderson. I've found his writing has been a little off since he returned from his sabbatical.

Folse was in there when we went, but he was just eating. My blue rare steak was great.
